B20 William "Piri Hoa" Hoar(d) b.1801 Chester, Vermont, USA

An exciting new page to document the Māori branch supposedly started when William Hoar(d) emigrated to New Zealand. Work will now begin to recruit presumed Patriline descendants (and all others for Autosomal testing) to see if this researched line can be verified with DNA. Also, there seems to be some issue as to whether William had children and family in Vermont that he abandoned after jumping ship in New Zealand. We work to highlight the various theories developed so far and, possibly with DNA assistance, determine the family line for William and his siblings. Questions looking to resolve

1. Is William "Piri Hoa" Hoard of New Zealand the William Hoard b.1801 of Chester, Windsor, Vermont, USA?
2. Did William marry Mary Cummings and then abandon her in Vermont? Were there any children from that marriage?
3. Is William's brother Jehial then married to the same Mary Cummings? Are any of their children actually fathered by William?

If the first question above is answered via yDNA testing, then the timeline of when children are born should help answer the others with regards to who fathered the children. This because it is generally believed known when William left Vermont on the whaling vessel, never to return. According to Thomas Kanara's Geni profile, William jumped ship in New Zealand from a whaling vessel sailing from Canada in 1828. The official crew list for Ann Alexander Voyage has been located (see External References below) and potentially confirms our Williams presence on board the ship. This would explain the two families: tirst marriage to Mary in Vermont, then remarry Te Oki in New Zealand. He further surmised that Williams brother Jehial married Williams wife Mary Cummings, provided shelter for what he believes are Williams kids with Mary. But are these Williams kids or his?

Conflicts in Research

There are apparent conflicts between work represented on Geni, Rootsweb, Genealogie Online and similar sites where others have posted their research on this line. Rootsweb being Charlotte Jack, Roz Edson, Joyce Selix, et al's effort (mostly Charlotte for this line).

1. Did William have any children with Mary?
   • Rootsweb has William marrying Mary Cummings and no kids or death date. Geni has William remarrying Te Oki ??? in New Zealand.
   • Rootsweb has Williams brother Jehial marrying a Mary ??? and having many kids. Geni has those kids associated with Mary and William. As well as kids of Te Oki and William.
   • Rootsweb further has Jehial remarrying two more times.
   • Geneologieonline has a listing of Mary's household listing Jehial as 1st husband, William as 2nd husband. Lists Jehial as the father of all the children.
   • Rootsweb also has Jehial listed as the father to all of Mary's children. No children listed with William.
   • Further clarity or confirmation regarding the children and Mary and whether or not Jehial or William is the biological father still needs to be confirmed.

Any supported documents or resources that can confirm are welcome. Have messaged geneologieonline (dutch) for any documentation that can clarify who the father of the children are.

Closure

1. All birth dates listed on Rootsweb, Geneologieonline and geni.com list Mary's children as being born from 1830 onwards.
2. As mentioned above, the Official crew list of the Anne Alexander Whaling Voyage left port in 1828 of which William was on board.
3. Thus being how William migrated to New Zealand, and not returning to his port of origin.
4. Therefore based on the birth dates of the children being born well after 1828 when William left. It make sense to believe that all the children of Mary must belong to Jehial.
5. Both Rootsweb and Genologieonline list Jehiel Hoard as the father of all of Mary's children
6. Geneologieonline also lists Jehial remarrying two more times after Mary, as does Rootsweb.

Hezekiah, son of William (William being the great-grandson of Hezekiah Hoar b1608) had a number of children. William b1801 was just one of them. Jehial is another that is of interest here. As the questions revolve around William, his marriages and children, and his brother Jehial's marriages and children, we cover that a bit more now.

The table below is the proposed children of William and Jehial with the respective wives. Something that needs to be further flushed out with diligent research into available documents.

Some indicate that William was married to Mary and with children when he abandoned them when jumping ship in New Zealand. The story further states that some (or all) of the children associated with Jehial and Mary are actually Williams.
