James Hoar
b.1802 Boston, Massachusetts
m.1823abt Jane Bronson
d.1880 Wharton, Fayette, Pennsylvania, USA
See the early draft B26DNA companion page also.
See Roz's entry for James in her DB. This is our first active, non-singlet study that does not show roots back to England. Mostly because there is a brick wall in research at 1800. One of the founders hit that with his B19 study but yDNA then atxDNA helped him blast through the brick wall of genealogical research. So a hope has been the same here.
One has now tested BigY-700 and it appears this group is an NPE from Orr. They are placed in the thick of a detailed Orr Surname Study group. Previously, we only had basic yDNA testing from Ancestry and 23andMe which placed them in haplogroup R1a-Z283. Both branches from different sons of James match this. This represents the first R1a branch in this surname study. But is an NPE from Scotland / Northern Ireland of Orr back to the time of the formation of surnames. So likely not much more to happen here except to document the effort to find the link and surname change from Orr.
James has been a bit of an enigma / mystery. Not just because of the lack of records. But the reprinting of a story on his wife after she passed in just about every local paper in the country. See the link below for the article entitled "James Hoar's Exile ..."
In the article, it states James is a cousin of "Senator Hoar". There were numerous "Senator Hoar"'s in the 1800's. And all descended from the B00 Charles Hoare line. Likely this is implying Senator George Frisbee Hoar. That B00 line is well tested and placed in the I haplogroup branch of the phylogenetic tree. The multiple testers for James line here is down the R1a branch. This implies James is not a cousin of "Senator Hoar"; at least not on the same patriline based on testing DNA descendants of both lines today. What is likely needed are more descendants from George Frisbee and Ebenezer Rockwood Hoare to be found (if they had children) and tested to verify there is no NPE along the way. Also, more research into George Frisbee Hoare's family to determine how a James Hoar(e) might be a cousin. This link into Roz's DB is of George Frisbee's grandfather Samuel Hoar and all his descendants that she captured so far.
We have not heard of Pirates in the Boston, Massachusetts area at that time. Nor who could be involved with them that may have caused James to flee.
* Family member DNA tested; placed in group (YDNA-STR and/or Autosomal SNP aka FamilyFinder; y is for simple SNP test on Ancestry or 23andMe)
** DNA test results pending; believed group based on genealogical work only
