- Other Surname Projects
This page is simply a collection of other Surname Study related pages that have been helpful for one reason or another to the administrators of this group. More of a reminder or catalog of resources.
There are other listings of surname projects as well:
It should be noted that One-Name studies, such as those supported by GoONS, are different in character than DNA Surname projects. The former seek to collect and catalog all recorded uses of a surname in a given geographic region (or similar criteria). DNA Surname projects attempt to categorize DNA results into likely, constituent Family Branches with common ancestors. With that said, more often than not today, One-Name studies and DNA Surname projects are one in the same. A mash up of traditional genealogical search with one-name efforts to cast a wide net over available information.
- Roger's DNA — the admins here created the GEDMatch site used heavily for Autosomal DNA analysis and matching independent of a testing company. This group has also created the GEDDNA software for DNA Surname projects specifically.
- McGhee Surname DNA Project -- and source / home of the yDNA STR analysis utility
- Morley DNA — and source of the yDNA SNP analysis utility to analyze SNPs captured in the AncestryDNA, 23andMe and similar autosomal tests
- Blair DNA — anicely organized, nicely sized surname project focused on yDNA STR testing only
- Phillips DNA — a larger, more extensive project with ties to the Guild of One-Name Studies (GoONS).
- Whitney Research Group (WRG) — one of the earlier and larger surname studies
- Wheaton Surname Project Resources page — a good genetic genealogy tutorial and links to other posts on the topic
- Wesley Johnston Projects page — many interesting takes and studies on various family-related items for this researcher; not a blog but not just a personalized site
There are other listings of surname projects as well:
- FamilyTreeDNA Projects — the source for most ySTR Surname DNA projects due to FTDNA
- ISOGG Surname Projects — the list of surname projects at the International Society of Genetic Genealogy (ISOGG)
