Deceased Name: Marion E. Gavin, 91
HINGHAM ? Marion E. (Hoar) Gavin, 91, of Hingham, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011 at Harbor House in Hingham, surrounded by her loving family, after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late David Roche Gavin (1919-1999), mother of four, grandmother of four and great-grandmother of five.
Born Feb. 27, 1920 to Irish immigrants, Patrick and Mary (Lysaght) Hoar, Marion grew up in Haverhill with her five siblings, John, Francis, Elizabeth, Patricia (Williams) and Dorothy (Colbert), who all predeceased her. A graduate of Haverhill High School, Marion received her nursing training from the Faulkner Hospital School of Nursing in 1942, and held her RN license from then until 2008. In 1944 she traveled to Palm Springs, Calif. to marry Dave, her high school sweetheart and moved to Hingham in 1948.
She worked as a nurse at Merriman, Inc. in Hingham for many years and managed the household when her husband Dave, a Chief Master Sergeant in the USAF, was deployed overseas. Marion worked for the Hingham Visiting Nurse Association for many years. She received a 20-year volunteer pin from the Hingham Red Cross and also volunteered with the St. Paul's Mothers Club and was an Honorary member of the Catholic Women's Club since 1961. She served as a private care nurse for artist Frank Vining Smith and typographer/craftsnman William A. Dwiggins of Hingham. Marion enjoyed spending time at the family getaway in Kezar Falls, Maine. She spent many winters in Naples, Fla., where she and Dave volunteered for 10 years at St. Vincent's Thrift Shop.
Marion led a full and active life, but the essence of her life was her family. She loved to spend as much of her time as possible with her grandchildren and extended family, including many beloved nieces and nephews. She will be sadly missed by all those who were blessed to have her in their lives.
Marion is survived by her children, Jo-Ann Gavin Yuska and her husband Joseph of Weymouth, William Francis Gavin of Nashua, N.H., and Stephanie Fox of Atlanta, Mary Gavin of Haverhill and David Richard Gavin and his wife Kerry of Haverhill; grandmother of Joseph Yuska and his wife Randy of Haverhill, David Yuska and his wife Kathleen of Cary, N.C., Denis Yuska of Weymouth and Julia Gavin of Lowell. Marion; also very proudly had five great-grandchildren, Victor and Michael Yusk, of Haverhill and William, James and Mason Yuska of Cary, N.C.
ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Sunday 2 to 6 p.m. in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central Street), Hingham. A Celebration of Life service will be held in the funeral home at 9:15 a.m. on Monday prior to the funeral Mass in Immaculate Conception Church, Weymouth at 10 a.m. Burial will be in High Street Cemetery, Hingham.
