Obituary
HOAR, John F. John F. Hoar of Punta Gorda, FL, formerly of Farmington, West Hartford, and Longmeadow, MA, died on Friday, (Jan. 30, 2004) after a long illness. Born in Springfield, MA on July 28, 1930, he is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 50 years, Doreen (Winters) Hoar; three daughters, Karen Lee (Gilbert) Getz of Nederland, TX, Laurie J. Tursi, of S. Windsor, and Doreen A. (Michael) Friel of West Hartford. John is also survived by six cherished grandchildren, Eric A. and Cheryl A. Getz, Wayne J. and Matthew J. Tursi, and Michael S. and Jennifer D. Friel. Additionally, he is survived by two sisters, Clare (J. Stanley) Cummings of Longmeadow, MA and Ann (Stephen Jr.) O'Brien of Springfield, MA; and his sister-in-law, Lucille B. Hoar of Lakeland, Florida He was predeceased by his parents, Atty. Ignatius M. and Margaret (O'Brien) Hoar of Springfield, MA; and his brother, Robert I. Hoar, of Upper Montclair, New Jersey He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. John graduated from Cathedral High School (Springfield, MA) and attended St. Michael's College (Burlington, VT) before graduating from Boston University in 1952. He received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy after serving in the Korean Conflict and was a member of the American Legion, Post 96. After a 36-year career in the insurance industry, John retired in 1990 as a Vice President from Sedgwick-James, an insurance brokerage agency. The family extends special thanks to John's wonderful physicians, Drs. Vance Wright-Browne, Nancy Hundt and Michael Katin and the compassionate staff at Hospice of Southwest Florida. Family and friends may gather on Thursday, Feb. 5, at 8:30 a.m., from Sampson's Chapel of The Acres, 21 Tinkham Rd., Springfield, MA, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 519 Longmeadow St. (Rt. 5), Longmeadow, Massachusetts Burial will be in the family plot in St. Michael's Cemetery, Springfield, Massachusetts Friends may call on Wednesday, Feb. 4, from 4-8 p.m. at Sampson's Chapel of The Acres. Contributions in John's memory may be made to the Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238 or the American Cancer Society.
