      Plain Dealer, The (Cleveland, OH) - November 9, 2001
      Deceased Name: Milton Harr, was Plain Dealer ad executive
      Shaker Heights - Services for Milton R. Harr, retired Plain Dealer classified advertising director, will be at 2 p.m. today at Suburban Temple-Kol Ami, 22401 Chagrin Blvd., Beachwood.
      Harr, 94, died Wednesday at his residence in Shaker Heights.
      He retired in 1972 after 14 years as classified ad chief and 45 years with the company.
      "Mr. Harr was the best classified advertising manager in the country in his time," said Alex Machaskee, Plain Dealer presi dent and publisher. "He was loyal to his associates and insisted his customers get the best service our newspaper could provide. Milt was passionate, dedicated and an innovator in bringing buyers and sellers together in the newspaper marketplace."
      After retiring, Harr traveled throughout the United States for five years as a consultant for the Newhouse family of newspapers, which included The Plain Dealer. Then he volunteered as a patient representative at St. Luke's Hospital for 10 years.
      Harr, who was born Milton R. Horr in Etna, Pa., grew up in Cleveland. The Glenville High School graduate attended Ohio State University and Cleveland Law School.
      In 1926, he began his career with The Plain Dealer as a classified ad salesman. He moved on to the retail advertising department, then became manager of the travel and resort department.
      He changed his surname to Harr when he joined the Army in World War II. He served in medical administration in Europe and attained the rank of master sergeant.
      After the war, Harr returned to The Plain Dealer. He became assistant classified ad manager in 1953 and director of the department in 1958.
      In 1971, he was honored by the Cleveland Employment Service Association for his assistance in helping the organization improve its service to the community.
      Harr was a member of the Mid-Day Club, Cleveland Chamber of Commerce and Cleveland Advertising Club.
      Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Iris; daughter, Amy H. Peck of Baltimore; and two grandchildren.
      Arrangements are by the Berkowitz-Kumin-Bookatz Memorial Chapel of Cleveland Heights.
