RAPID CITY ? Sadie Marie Hoar, 96, of Rapid City, died Friday, September 21, 2001, at WestHills Village.
She was born November 4, 1904, in a farm home near Brewster, Minnesota, to Frank and Annie Stearns. At the age of 6, she moved to a homestead near Provo, S.D., with her four brothers and parents. She completed grade school at a country school, getting there by horseback, wagon, sleigh, or walking. She attended high school at Provo and Edgemont and graduated with the class of 1924. She advanced her education by receiving a Teacher's Certificate in elementary education from Spearfish Normal. Her teaching career involved teaching the first year at a country school between Cascade and Rumford, S.D., for $75 per month. The following few years, she taught school in Provo, S.D., in the schoolhouse that her father helped build, and the salary was $110 per month. Her three oldest children also attended the same school for their first few years of education, and the schoolhouse still stands today.
On June 1, 1929, she married John D. Hoar in Custer. She was actively involved in all cattle ranching operations for 43 years until 1972, when they retired in Hot Springs.
Even though Sadie's schedule on the ranch was busy from before daylight to after dark, she still found time for Ladies Aid, Ladies Extension Clubs, many years on various school boards, several years as a 4-H leader and 4-H mom, Sunday School teacher, organist and superintendent.
She was known for her inner strength and her positive and accepting attitude. She took great and caring pleasure in her family, friends and church. She has been a member of the United Church in Edgemont for 80 years.
Survivors include three sons and two daughters, Robert and wife Charlotte of Temecula, Calif., Anice Reiman and husband Leonard of Altoona, Wis., Darrell and wife Jo of Black Hawk, Donald and wife Doris of Poynette, Wis., and Patty Brunner and husband Don of Rapid City; one brother, Charlie Stearns and wife Beverly of Hot Springs; 18 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John, on March 11, 1982; and her brothers, Ted, Art and Ed Stearns.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 26, at United Church in Edgemont, with Pastor Elizabeth Jassmann officiating. Burial will follow in the Edgemont Cemetery.
A memorial has been established to the United Church of Edgemont.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel, Edgemont, S.D.
