- Dedham Avery-s :
INFORMATION FROM: GENEALOGICAL RECORD OF THE DEDHAM BRANCH OF THE AVERY FAMILY IN AMERICA, compiled by Jane G. (Avery) Carter and Susie P. Holmes. Published by Winslow W. Avery of Plymouth, MA, 1893.
Joseph (8), William-7, William-6, William-5, William-4 (came to New England in 1650 to Dedham, MA), Robert-3, William-2, Robert of Pill-1.
Note: Pill is now known as Pylle, Somerset, England. This was the residence of our earliest known ancestor, Robert Avery (1), is 3 1/4 miles south of Shepton Mallet, in White Stone Hundred; acres, 1,570; houses, 35 in 1831;population, 216 in 1841. Pylle House (as per Black's Guide) is on the Bath & Bridport Railway. There is a town by the same name near the mouth of the Severn, on map of England, in Cotton's general atlas of 1862, (it is not the ancient Pill, however,) 15 1/2 miles from Bath, and 2 1/4 miles from Shepton Mallot.
The name Pill seems to correspond to the Welsh POIEL, an inlet or pool.
William Avery-4, our earliest ancestor in America, lived in Barkham, Berkshire, England.
DEDHAM , CONGREGATIONAL FIRST CHURCH RECORDS- record the birth of Joseph Avery.
