6355 | Courtesy of the Fort Frances Museum Obituary: Edward Wellington Backus Born 1861 Married Elizabeth Horr Backus Died October 29th, 1934 Mr. Edward Wellington Backus, of Minneapolis was noted as a modern Napolean of finance, diplomacy and astuteness. Backus was among the leaders in the newsprint and timber industry. An empire builder he envisioned the possibilities of power, timber and natural resources. He was the first capitalist to show his faith in the industrial future of Fort Frances by putting up his money and every dollar he could get from outside resources to develop water power. In 1882 Backus began his lumbering career at the age of 21 with the Lee and McCullock company, buying out the interest of the junior partner the following year. The firm of Lee and Backus was succeeded in 1885 and in 1899 changed to the Backus-Brooks Company. In 1892, with a timber cruiser, Backus walked 200 miles through deep snow to arrive shortly after midnight at a Huddon's Bay company Post, now Fort Frances. In the crisp clear moonlight he viewed the majestic Falls and envisioned the future of power developments, paper mills and sawmills, staff support in the existence of two large towns, with footpaths being supplanted with railroads. Mr. Backus was noted as "a man of splendid physique... he had the head of statesman and shoulders of a gladiator. His beaming eyes denoted his keen intellect and his retentitive memory... Or commanding appearance, he was a man of note whether in village circles or in the financial centers of the east... He devoted his time and energies to the development of his industrial enterprise." Mr. Backus, like many other financiers over-extended his activities during the prosperous period following World War I. Suffering severe losses, his endeavors to recoup his losses and advanced aged were factors in his death in 1934 when he succumbed to a heart attack in New York. Sketch of Old Shepody - William DANIELS, whose grant adjoined the Dickson grant, came from New London, Conn. in the year 1770. He and his wife were members of a Methodist society and for some years were the only persons in Shepody who sustained that character. A 'zealous society' was formed in 1782 and from that time Mr. Daniels continued to take an active part in prayer meetings and called people together on the Sabbath. He died in 1811 and was buried in the old Daniel burying ground. His family were William DANIELS, Joseph DANIELS, John DANIELS, Asa DANIELS, Demas DANIELS, Sara Elizabeth DANIELS, Olive DANIELS, Eunice DANIELS and Ann DANIELS. SHEA, of Chicopee Falls, Hampden County, Mass., ex-Postmaster and well-known undertaker, was born in County Kerry, Ireland, March 15, 1840. His parents, Maurice and Ellen (Moriarty) Shea, were natives of the same place, where the father followed for a number of years the trade of blacksmith; but in 1849 he came to America, and located in Holyoke, Mass., being there employed for many years by Captain Mack, working, however, at different places as opportunity offered. Maurice Shea lived to be eighty-eight years old and his wife to be sixty-two years of age. They were the parents of six children, named as follows: Johanna, Mary, Ellen, Catherine, Patrick M., and John, all of whom are now living. Patrick M. was educated in the schools of Holyoke, and worked for a while with his father at the trade of blacksmith. During the early part of the war he was in the employ of the Massachusetts Arms Company, and later at Whitneyville he worked for the Whitneyville Arms Company on guns and at tool forging. After the war he came to Chicopee Falls, and worked in the shops of Belcher & Taylor, and also was in the employ of the Lamb Manufacturing Company and of the J. Stevens Company on fine work. In 1866 Mr. Shea opened a dry-goods store in the village on Bridge Street, which was in successful operation till 1873. He then moved to Main Street, and opened the undertaker's establishment, which he has since conducted, likewise having charge of the Catholic cemetery, selling the lots as required. He has also established a livery, which is the largest in the village. He has erected new stables with office in connection, also boarding stables, and keeps a supply of from fourteen to twenty horses for public use. In 1861 Mr. Shea was married to Miss Bridget A. Hoar, who was born in County Kerry, Ireland, in August 1840, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Shea) Hoar, of that locality, who became farmers of Chicopee Falls after coming to America. They both lived to advanced age, the father being eighty-six years old at the time of his death, and his wife eighty-eight years. Their family consisted of eleven children, as follows: Johanna, Patrick, Mary, Ellen, Catherine, Elizabeth, Maurice, Thomas, John, Bridget, and Michael, five only of whom are now living. Mr. and Mrs. Shea are the parents of thirteen children, namely: Elizabeth, born in 1862, now wife of William M. Scanlan, civil engineer, living in New York City; Maurice, born 1863; Allen, born 1865; John, born 1867 (these three deceased); Frank J., born 1869; Joseph T., born 1871; Patrick L., born 1873; Michael I., born 1875; Mary R., born 1878; Dorothy, born 1880; Cecelia, born 1883; Theresa C., born 1884; and Ambrose, born 1886 (deceased). Mrs. Shea found time, in addition to the management of her large family, to establish quite a business in dressmaking and millinery, which indicates well the energy of her character and her habits of ceaseless industry. Mr. Shea is a Democrat in his politics, and takes an active interest in all matters which concern the good government of the village. He is one of the Trustees of the Chicopee Falls Savings Bank, and has served as Postmaster under President Cleveland's first administration. As an enterprising business man and a loyal citizen, he receives the confidence and respect of his neighbors and fellow-townsmen. Patrick's obituary was published in an unknown newspaper as follows: DEATH OF PATRICK M. SHEA Veteran Undertaker Passes Away From Pneumonia Patrick M. Shea, 71, a former postmaster of Chicopee Falls, and for 40 years engaged in the undertaking business there, died at his home at 112 Belcher street yesterday morning of pneumonia. He had been critically ill for over a week, but on Saturday and Sunday his condition showed improvement, which, with the fact that he had twice before recovered from very serious attacks of pneumonia, gave his family and friends grounds for hope that he might recover. Mr Shea was born in Gingle, County Kerry, Ireland, March 15, 1839. When he was five years old his parents came to the United States and settled in South Hadley Falls, where his father, Maurice Shea, was employed as a blacksmith. He went to school in that town, and came to Chicopee with his family in 1859. He lived in Chicopee all the rest of his life, with the exception of some months during the civil war, when he worked at making rifles for the government at the Whitneyville armory in New Haven, Ct. Mr Shea's first work in Chicopee was for the Ames manufacturing company and the Belcher & Taylor company, after which he went into a drygoods store. He opened his undertaking business about 40 years ago, and later added to it a livery stable business, both of which he ran up to the time of his death. Mr Shea was appointed postmaster of Chicopee Falls by President Cleveland in the second year of his first term, and held this office for about five years, when the republican president appointed his successor. Mr Shea was well known by everybody in the Falls, and was esteemed for his substantial character and likable personality. He was an organizer of the Father Mathew temperance society, but of late years had not been a member. He was an early member of the Hibernians, and a member of Elder council, Knights of Columbus. For a number of years he was a trustee of the Chicopee savings bank. Mr Shea was married June 12, 1861, in Chicopee, to Bridget A. Hoar of Chicopee. He is survived by his widow, four sons, Frank J. There will be a requiem high mass at St Patrick's church at 9.30 o'clock. The burial will be in St Patrick's cemetery. Patrick died 25 April 1910 in Chicopee, Hampden County, Massachusetts, and was buried in Chicopee Falls, Hampden County, Massachusetts. Bridget died 21 November 1919 in Chicopee, Hampden County, Massachusetts, and was buried in Chicopee Falls, Hampden County, Massachusetts. They both died at 112 Belcher Street and were buried in the Patrick M. Shea family plot, St. Mark Section, St. Patrick's Cemetery, Chicopee, Masachusetts. Benjamin Hoar in 1785" Bristol Town Council and Probate Court, Book #2, Part 1, 1760-1792, page 361. On 5 December 1791, "Benjamin Hoar and Priscilla his wife appeared in council and prayed that administration might be granted to them on ther personal estates of her first husband, Joseph Pool, late of Bristol, mariner, deceased and also of her second late husband Ebenezer Gladding, late of said Bristol, mariner, deceased which was granted, they giving bond and performing other things as the law directs, Shearz. Bourn, Esq., and Nathaniel Pearse, Jr. yeoman are to give bond with said adminstrators." Date: Sat Mar 17, 2007 From: Dave Pettee: Dapettee(at)aol.com To: Roz Edson: MrsEdson(at)gmail.com Subject: Re: Priscilla, wife of Benjamin Hoar Roz- Yep, some progress was made. However, this Joseph Pool guy is proving elusive, too, although there is a Joseph Pool who was living in Providence in 1777 and is recorded in the Military Census. This will take a day at the RI Archives to try to hunt him down. So, having spent a day in Bristol chasing Priscilla, at the moment, here's where I am leaning. I don't have any idea if she was a Waldron. There are two things that suggest she could be; the naming of her son John Waldron Hoar(d) and if you back up 77 from 1835, the year of her death, it comes to 1758, which was the year she would have been born, if she was the dtr of John and Elizabeth (?) Waldron. There were two John and Elizabeth Waldrons in Bristol. There was John Waldron, Esq. b. in 1727, son of Joseph and Martha (Newton) Waldron. John married before 1751 Elizabeth (Allin), dtr of Mathew and Ruth (Stockbridge) Allin of Barrington. There was John Waldron, Blacksmith, b. 1738, son of Cornelius and Ann (Throop) Waldron of Bristol. This John likely married Eliza (Martin) on 22 February 1757. Here's the major problem, notwithstanding that I haven't found a marriage record for Priscilla (?) to Joseph Pool. The wills of John and Elizabeth (Allin) Waldron don't name her. She survived her parents by some 35 years, and was 15 years into her marriage with Benjamin Hoar with 6 kids, before her father died. John Waldron, blacksmith died intestate, as did his wife Eliza. Matthew Allin survived long enough to leave a will, and Priscilla isn't referenced. Could she have been a black sheep? Three marriages to mariners, but the first two died. Or, is it a concidence that Shearjashub Bourne was one of the yeoman who gave bond to Benjamin and Priscilla Hoar in 1791? Mr. Bourne was the husband of Ruth Waldron, dtr of John and Elizabeth (Allin) Waldron, so this Bourne would have been her brother-in-law. I don't she is from this family. So, if she is a Waldron, then is she the dtr of the other John and Eliza (Martin) Waldron? They don't seem to have had any children according to Bristol records, except maybe Priscilla, 11 months after they were married? One researcher in 1966 claimed the birth records that seem to place her in the family of John and Elizabeth (Allin) Waldron were recorded wrong because the transcriber forgot to add a 2nd after John Waldron, blacksmith's name. I have seem the handwritten draft that was copied by the LDS folks in 1980, not the orginal record, and there is no obvious 2nd recorded. If we look at naming pattern of the children of Benjamin and Priscilla (?) Hoar, Elizabeth- after her mother? Hannah- paternal ggreat-mother? John Waldron- father? Mary? William- Benjamin's father? Abner-? John Waldron, blacksmith, also had an older sister named Priscilla who died in 1741. Could he have named a dtr after? He was only 3 when his sister died. So, as I tie this up, as a measuring stick, I would not feel ready to submit this to the Mayflower folks as Elizabeth Allin is a Richard Warren descendant. It doesn't stand on its own. Not yet. I am treating her as someone with an unknown surname for the time being. Dave | Waldron, Priscilla (I34196)

If you go to www.darcisplace.com/darci/root-philo.htm There is a clipping on Philo Root who married Julia Horr. It looks like they were most likely married in Jefferson County, NY. There is obviously some mistakes in this. It says John Root was called from earth in 1858, but he is living with his son Stephen in 1860 in Greenville, Outagamie, Wisconsin. He was age 84 and born in England. Mary Luff, born ca 1780-1784, was the daughter of (Samuel Luff, born 1753 in Cranbrook, Kent, England. Died August 22, 1822 in Sackets Harbor, Jefferson County, NY and Sarah Parker, They were married November 14, 1774 in Biddenden, Kent, England.) Mary Luff married Charles Mitchell January 8, 1798 in Staplehurst, Kent, England. Charles died January 1, 1800 in Staplehurst. There is a Mary Root, wife of John, buried in the Stone Cemetery on Pillar Point. She died 22 January 1852, age 77. Cathie | Luff, Mary (I25006)

This family first appears on the 1900 US Federal Census residing in McKeesport, PA. 6390 | David Porter Peary (also spelled Peavey) was the son of War of 1812 veteran Moses Peary, and was born in 1822 in Denmark, Oxford County. In September, 1850, he was a Sandy River farmer who owned $50 in real estate and lived with the family of David and Betsy Hoar. He married their daughter Deborah later that year and in 1860 was a farm laborer in Rangeley with two daughters. Peary enlisted from Rangeley in Company E, 13th Maine Infantry, on December 10, 1861. He re-enlisted on February 29, 1864, and was transferred to Company B, 30th Maine Infantry, on January 5, 1865, when the 13th was mustered out. He was mustered out with the 30th Maine on August 20, 1865, at Savannah, Georgia.. In 1870, Peary was a farmer in Rangeley with three children, real estate worth $600, and other assets valued at $160. He and his wife lived in Rangeley in 1880 with their four daughters and an infant grandson, David. Peary applied for a pension in 1883. In 1900, he and his wife, who had been married for 50 years, were living in Greenvale Plantation, which soon became part of Sandy River. He died on September 19, 1901. His widow applied for a pension that year and died in 1916. They are buried in Evergreen Cemetery; stones for them and their daughter Florence are at the Schoolhouse Cemetery. | Peary, David Porter (I8705)
