Discharged Company H, 14th Infantry Regiment Maine on 17 July 1865 From: History of Minnesota Augustus E. Horr The late Augustus E. Horr was one of the pioneer leaders in the lumber and logging industry in Minnesota, coming to St. Anthony in 1865, immediately after the close of the Civil war. He was a member of the old lumbering firm of Leavitt, Horr & Company until 1878, when an association with J. S. Pillsbury and others was formed under the name of the Gulf River Lumber Company, Mr. Horr serving as its treasurer. He also became interested, with his son-in-law, Mr. E. W. Backus, in what is now the Backus-Brooks Company, lumber manufacturers and merchants of Minneapolis. Mr. Horr was vice president of the latter organization at the time of his death. He died at his home in Minneapolis September 15, 1908, after an illness of more than two years. His high ideals, simplicity and straightforwardness of character in his everyday life made his name synonymous with business integrity for nearly fifty years in Minneapolis commercial circles. Augustus E. Horr was born at Waterford, Maine, in 1838. A native of the Pine Tree State, he possessed the rugged qualities of its hills and forests and came almost naturally into lumbering as a business, and it is a noteworthy fact that many of the ablest characters in not only the lumbering but other industrial lines of the Northwest have been from Maine and adjacent states of New England. In 1861 Augustus E. Horr enlisted in Company G, First Maine Volunteer Infantry, and saw active service with that regiment, contracting while in the service a malignant form of measles, which left his eyes in a very weak condition. However, immediately upon being released from the hospital he rejoined his regiment, and as a result, entirely lost the sight of one eye. He was an ardent patriot and for many years was identified with the Rawlins Post No. 126 of the Grand Army of the Republic at Minneapolis. For many years he was also a trustee of the First Congregational Church of Minneapolis. Mr. Horr's associates knew him to be a man with whom hard work was a native characteristic, straightforward in all his dealings, a keen and efficient business man of scrupulous honesty whose word was as good as his bond and the mere mention of his name in connection with any business or enterprise was sufficient guaranty of its worthiness. Mr. Horr is survived by his widow, Emily Leavitt Horr, a daughter of Josiah Leavitt, and by two children - a daughter, Mrs. E. W. Backus, and a son, Mr. Renselaer Leavitt Horr. Mrs. Horr still resides at the old homestead, No. 421 Fourth Street, S.E., Minneapolis, and her son, Mr. Renselaer L. Horr, resides at No. 419 Fourth Street, S. E., next door to the place where he was born. He has followed in his father's footsteps in the lumber business and is one of Minneapolis' progressive business men Groom's Name: Augustus E. He was reared upon a farm. He enlisted in 1864 in the Thirty-Second Maine Regiment, and took part in the battles of Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, and others. He came to Waterford [Vermont] in 1871, and for several years worked here for different farmers. He married in 1878, Celia, daughter of Samuel and Lucinda Church of Waterford. Soon afterwards he bought the Huntoon farm and conducted it about a dozen years, when he purchased the paternal home farm of his wife, a fine farm of 165 acres on Connecticut river, where he has since resided. Mr. Horr found this farm somewhat neglected, only keeping a small stock. He engaged in dairying, and as his wife is an excellent butter maker, soon found a ready and constant demand for all of his butter at Littleton, New Hampshire, at remunerative prices. He keeps a dairy of twenty or more well-selected cows and makes about 5,000 pounds of butter per annum. He usually keeps about forty head of cattle, ten horses and colts, and twenty swine, and the farm has so increased in fertility that in 1899 he built a model barn, 75x44 feet, with ell 35x26, with entire basement. Mr. Horr is an excellent horseman, and has reared and sold many good ones, and also kept and trained horses and colts for others. Mr. Horr has acceptably served the town of Waterford [Vermont] many years as constable and collector. He is a man of quiet habits, a good neighbor, public-spirited citizen, and successful farmer. Note: John Hoar married Alice Sidney, daughter of Philip Sidney and Lady Alice (Lisle) Sidney. http://genforum.genealogy.com/hobart/messages/482.html John Hoar married Alice Sidney not Lisle Posted by: Rinnah Burns Date: March 05, 2008 I was sent information from the Graves Family Newsletter of 2002 --pages 12-16. In it the Editor's note states that John Hoar married Alice Sidney, daughter of Philip Sidney and Lady Alice (Maiden Name Unknown) Sidney. I have found the Sidney Family of Robert Sidney and Barbara Gamage to be the closest line Alice Sidney who married John Hoar. Robert and Barbara Gamage Sidney had 11 children. One was Alice Sidney b. 1605--brother was Philip Sidney b. 1590 who is the father of Alice Sidney (Lady Lisle) who married John Hoar. Their sister Philippa married John Hobart brother of Mary Elizabeth Hobart who married John Lisle. Philip Sidney's brother Robert b. 1595 was the father of Algernon Sidney who was friends with Lady Alicia Beacomsawe Lisle--Algernon and Lady Alicia were beheaded on the same day. Typhena Lisle married Leonard Hoar brother of John Hoar. Robert Sidney b. 1563 Viscount Lisle Barbara Gamage b.1565 Children were Philippa Sidney b. 1599 married John Hobart, brother of Mary Elizabeth Hobart who married Lord John Lisle. Robert Sidney b. Dec 1, 1595 son was Algernon Sidney who was friends with Lady Alicia Beacomsawe Lisle--Algernon and Lady Alicia were beheaded the same day. Philip Sidney b. 1590--daughter Alice Sidney (Lady Lisle)--grandfather Robert was Viscount Lisle-married John Hoar Mary Sidney b. 1586 married Sir Robert Wroth--she wrote poetry Very Famous Elizabeth Sidney b. 1602 William Sidney b. 1585 Catherine Sidney b.1597 married Lewis Mansel Barbara Sidney b. 1600 married 1. Thomas Smythe 2. Thomas Colepepper Bridget Sidney b. 1604 Henry Sidney b.1587 Alice Sidney b. 1605 Sir Robert Sidney b.Nov 19, 1563 was given the Title of Viscount Lisle in 1605. I think this is where the confusion came in on the Lisle name. Alice daughter of Philip Sidney would be Lady Alice Sidney Lisle--but Lisle in this case is a Title not a surname. Now it is understandable why F. Phelps Leach and his sister Elizabeth M. Leach Rixford made this mistake. All these familes of Sidney, Hobart, Hoar, Lisle were all related either by marriage and Royal Blood cousins. The Will of Alicia Lisle of Moyles Court http://books.google.com/books?id=yWdTXEEhTSMC&pg=RA1-PA90&lpg=RA1-PA90&dq=%22alicia+lisle+of+moyles+court%22&source=web&ots=kTsal4SGxy&sig=AlWFDaKkjxNm02nc-hlPg3Ji6k8#v=onepage&q=%22alicia%20lisle%20of%20moyles%20court%22&f=false http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.hoar/214/mb.ashx We can thank F. Phelps Leach and his sister Elizabeth M. Leach Rixford for the myth that the wife of John Hoar was Alice Lisle. His work on the Hungerford family postulated that Alice was a [?Lisle]. His sister removed the brackets and question mark. No one challenged them for years. The evidence through the Lisle family do NOT show a dau named Alice that married John Hoar. | (Unknown), Alice (I35790)
