Hoard, 91, of 3225 N. Main St. Ext., Jamestown, passed away peacefully in his sleep Friday, February 4, 2011. A lifelong area resident, he was born December 19, 1919, in Jamestown, the son of the late Edward "Ned" and Nora Cederquist Hoard. Bill was a 1938 graduate of Jamestown High School and served stateside as a medic in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a dairy farmer and sold pumpkins, squash, and zucchini from a stand in front of his house on Route 60 for more than 70 years. He loved his cows and cats and talking on the phone with friends and family, watching TV, especially professional wrestling and pitching horseshoes. Surviving are his brother in law, Robert R. Melquist of Lakewood; his caregivers, Alice and Kevin Carlson and their children of Sinclairville; a niece, Marcia Ogden of Houston, Texas; four nephews: Gary (Kathy) Melquist of Lakewood; Brian (Ardith) Melquist, Dale (Sue) Melquist and Mark (fiance Lisa) Melquist, all of Jamestown; three cousins: Patricia Carr, Theodore "Ted" Card and Warner Johnson, all of Jamestown; and a friend, Kathy Raab of Jamestown. She graduated from Miltonvale High School. She married Albert Sharp in October, 1935. In her early years she taught school and helped on family farms. In 1963, she and Albert bought the Frontier Cafe in Mankato until 1970 when they moved to Winfield. There they ran a Mode-A-Day Store for several years. She then went to work as a secretary at Winfield Hospital. After Albert's death, she married Charles Mikesell. After his death, she moved to Salina. She was very active with the Nazarene Church. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Alberta; three brothers, Elmer, Earl and Harry Lee Hoard; one sister, Junelda Dillon; an infant granddaughter, Susy; and two great-great grandsons, Jeremiah Neal and Justin Winter, Jr. Survivors include her children, Martha Belle Thomas of Gainsville, Fla., Betty Ann Turner of Salina, Johnie Lee Sharp and wife Sharon of Phoenix, Ariz.; five brothers, Charles Hoard of Miltonvale, Andy Junior Hoard of Smith Center, Keith Hoard of Oxford, Neb., Floyd Hoard of Lakewood, Colo. and Dean Hoard of Ft. Collins, Colo.; four sisters, Martha Jane Olson of Miltonvale, Bertha Mae Howell of Greeley, Colo, Evelyn Rafferty of Blue Springs, Mo. and Jean Taylor of Concordia; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-greandchildren; and one great-great grandson. He was born in Detroit, Mich., on Nov. 22, 1925, the fifth child of Helen and Michael Hoar. In 1943, at the age of 17 and the day after his high school graduation, Jim joined the U.S. Navy and served in North Africa, Italy and France. Returning home, he attended the University of Detroit, graduating in 1948 with a degree in business. Most of his career was spent in the machine tool industry. He worked for Whitman & Barnes, United Greenfield Corporation and Vermont American Corporation as a salesman, sales manager and finally as president of Vermont Tap & Die. He was a past president of the American Society of Machine Manufacturers and the Cutting Tool Association of America. Jim and Patricia Ann Phelan married in Detroit on April 16, 1955, and spent their 50 years of marriage in Dallas, Boston and Connecticut before moving to Montpelier where they have lived happily since 1970. Jim was active in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul throughout his life, and loved the game of golf, even if golf didn't always love him in return. In addition to his wife Pat, Jim is survived by his daughter, Dr. Mary Horan, and her partner Karen McGaffey of Seattle, Wash.; Maureen Horan White, her husband Jeff and sons Brendan and Cedric of Rutland; Dr. John Horan, his wife Ann and daughters Callan and Amelia of Austin, Texas; Catherine Horan, her husband Will Jackson and daughters Laura and Julia of Seattle, Wash.; James Horan and his wife Meghan Masco Horan of Portland, Ore.; and sister Peggy Burke of Grosse Pointe, Mich. Jim also leaves a legacy of wonderful family, friends and business associates throughout the country, but most especially at home in Montpelier. Calling hours will be at the Barber & Lanier Funeral Home in Montpelier on Friday evening, Jan. 13, between 7 and 9. June and Fred have celebrated 53 years of marriage. In 1982 Fred retired from the Buick Motor Division of General Motors after 30 years of employment. Fred was a member in good standing with the UAW Local 599, and a past member of the Vassar FOE. Fred leaves to cherish his memory: wife, June; four children, Julie and Frank Ramiller, Laura and Daniel Perrault, Janice and Stephen Essenmacher, and Joann Gaissert; eight grandchildren, Nick, Erica, Alina, Stephanie, Allyson, Mark, Daniel, and Shane; one great-grand-daughter, Kelli.
