The Horr's came from one of the Portland (Maine) islands??.Henry, wife Catherine and three sons: William, Jake and Levi. Victor Coffin, a resident of Flying Point, who had fished and lobstered around the bay with his father in his boyhood, tells about the Horr family. He said, "They had a fishing sloop. Sometimes they would be gone several days at a time. During the winter on the island they would live on whatever they had stored in the house cellar, such as cabbage, turnips, potatoes and pickled pork. It is also told by Mr. Coffin that one of the Horr boys started to build on a location, which is now the golf course, on the end nearest Goose Island. The cellar hole was about half dug when they excavated some Indian bones. They quickly ended the digging in that locality. He next chose a place on the west side. Levi (Horr), it is understood, built part of the Charles B. Henderson house which stands at present on Lot 15, Section E. The other two Horrs built nearby. These houses were typical of fishermen's houses on the Maine coast with just one or two rooms. They lived there with their wives for a few years. However, during the middle nineties, Coffin said he helped one of the families move out. In a year or so one of these houses burned and later the other was moved and added to Levi's. There are two cellar holes in evidence today, all that remain of where two of these establishments formerly stood. Another old house in this locality is the one presently occupied by the Hightower family on Lot 7, Section E. It was known for many years as the Old Fisherman's Cottage, on the west side or in more recent years "The Birches". An old letter, written by the Kelsey family revealed that it was built in the 1880's and occupied by a Chadwick family for several years. Soon after the Henry Horrs (brother of Orison Dana Horr) took up their residence in the Bibber Farm House on Bustins (Island), arrangements were made to teach school in the old home. In an early Town Report of Freeport (Maine), 1885, we have the following information: George H. Hughey, a teacher, reports that there are fourteen scholars on the various islands belonging to this town. My predecessor, Mr. Burr, established a school in the house of Henry Horr on Bustins Island. There has been a winter term only. We visited it at the first of the season, but owing to the bad storm, it was not visited at the close. Maine Death Records: Died Oct. 9, 1918 age 76yrs 3mos 5days. He d. in an accident at Chester, Vt., 14 Oct., 1890 (age 66 years, 4 months, 9 days). Civil War soldier, Co. "K", 16th Vt. Reg't. " He started from his home in Chester, Vt., about 1 mile west of the village, with a small load of potatoes on a 2-horse lumber wagon; he was sitting on a high box in the front end. In descending a steep hill a short distance on his way, by some means he evidently fell from his seat on to the whiffletrees, behind the horses and being unable to extricate himself, he lost control of his young and spirited team, and they ran violently down the hill. When a short distance below George Parker's house, he was left in the road, a mangled and bleeding corpse. His body was taken up by nearbys and carried into Mr. Parker's house while messengers were sent to break the terrible news to bereaved wife, (Lorena Susan Hoar) dau. of late Deacon Hoar. He leaves also one son, a chemist, living near Philadelphia. Deacon Minor had been a prominent member of the Baptist church and for the past 23 yrs, one of the deacons. He was noted for faithfulness and efficiency in church work, a man gifted in prayer and exhortation. He was laid aside his little son, long since laid to rest in South St. cemetery. CHESTER, VT NEWS: 1 July, 1920: "Harlan B. Miner of Philadelphia, son of the late Deacon Miner of Chester, was the guest of Mr. & Mrs. W. S. 26889 | Possible generation missing? (Note: By Roz Edson - MrsEdson(at)gmail.com) 1. Joseph was married in 1786 to Margaret Linvill/Linville who was born in 1756. 2. If he (Joseph) married between the ages of 18 and 30, he would have been born between 1756 and 1768, which seems much too late to be a child of Robert Hoar and Sarah Cox. 3. If he was born between 1719 and 1736 (Est. birth range of Robert Hoar and Sarah Cox' children) then he didn't marry and start his family until he was 50-64 years old; possible but seems improbable. 4. Joseph is listed as a freeman in 1770 (had to be at least 21 yrs. old) so he couldn't have been born any later than 1749. 5. I estimated his bithdate (abt 1740), based on the above, which would make him about 46 yrs old at the time of his marriage. (His parents would have been in their early forties if born in 1740.) http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/pa/lancaster/wills/willabsth-k.txt Wills: H-K Surnames: Will Abstracts 1721-1819: Lancaster Co, PA HOAR, JOSEPH Salisbury Twp.
