19256 | Information on this family was kindly contributed by Bob: charbo5(at)att.net [[ July 2011 From Bob Busk: charbo5(at)att.net Hi Roz: Just rambling thru World Search and noticed your desire for more info on Horr's. My wife's grandmother was Clara Horr before she married William Coleman. Clara was the daughter of Francis Horr, who was born in Starkenburg in 1847 and emigrated with family in 1854. His parents were Adam Horr and Margaretha [Kaiser, born 1806 in Darmstadt]. Some of Francis' siblings include Katherine Greulich, Louisa Boh, Evangeline Boh, Clara Scheppert, Michael [prisoner in Andersonville], John, Anna Kutzelmann, Josephine Volmer. Clara's siblings were Frank, Henry, Peter, and Charlotte Schoener. The Very Best, Bob Busk Hi Roz: Most definitely the same family. Under 149593, Franz [Francis, Frank] would be my wife's grandfather, who she never knew except from stories from her grandmother, Clara. Under 114143 which indicates that two sisters, Louisa and Evangelina Horr, married the Boh brothers [who came across on the same passage] are Franz's two older sisters. Most definitely the two entries are part of one family tree. The Very Best. Bob. | Horr, Adam (I14143)

19257 | Information on this family was kindly contributed by Bridgid Kelly bridgidckelly(at)hotmail.com Bridgid is in posession of a book put together by her great-grandfather Robert Linn Clare, son of Anna Horr and James Robert Clare. It contains biographies written by him, also letters and photographs and a xerox copy of the journal of Philip Henry Horr. Please contact her for further information. The following is the biography of Amanda Melvina Day written by Robert Linn Clare in 1942. Amanda Melvina Day She was born in Washington, Mason County, Kentucky on February 11, 1809 and according to her grandson John Wilhelm (presently living in Portsmouth, Ohio, eighty-seven years old), she was one of the "fighting days of Kentucky, rebels and slave owners" and that "she would have predominated in any station in life that she might have been called to occupy." She must have been a strong character as indicated somewhat by the attached copy of an old tintype of her. Her family moved from Kentucky to Franklin Furnace, Oho, a few miles up the Ohio River from Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio. There she met and married Jacob Wilhelm on June 5, 1829. Five children were born to them; George, married Emily Carter in Lancaster, Ohio, was Captain in Union Army and won Congressional Medal of Honor. Maria married James Long, Portsmouth, called "Tute" Mathilda married Philip H. Horr, called "Tillie-Ma" Belle married Daniel White, Portsmouth. John Day married a Miss Conway. After her husband's death, November 21, 1849, she and her children moved to Portsmouth, Ohio and lived at #9 West Fourth Street, where she operated a rooming and boarding house. In 1865 she took into her home her widowed daughter, Mathilda and her four children, because of the early death of Mathilda's husband, Philip H. Horr. It became a difficult struggle for these two widows to raise Mathilda's growing family. She lived to see these four grandchildren grow to adulthood and all but one married, and she saw quite a few of her great-grandchildren. They affectionately caller her "Mehi". She died April 16, 1892 at age eighty-three, in her Portsmouth home and is buried in the Horr family plot, Greenlawn Cemetery, Portsmouth, Ohio. RLC: 1942 | Day, Amanda Melvina (I3619)

The following is the biography of Catherine Horr written by Robert Linn Clare in 1958. Catherine Walsh Horr She was born in Portsmouth, Virginia in 1855. Her mother died at the time of her birth so she was left in the care of her Grandmother, Mrs. Fanny Walsh, until her father was able to properly care for her. Her father, Philip H. Horr, went to Portsmouth, Ohio where he met and married Mathilda Wilhelm in 1856. The baby Catherine then was taken by the father and stepmother to live with them in Ironton, Ohio about 1857. She remained with them until the early death of her father in 1864. She was then nine years old and had three half-brothers, William, Harry and Newton, and a baby half-sister Anna. Her widowed stepmother, Mathilda, then with five young children to raise and no means of support, was forced to send Catherine back to her Grandmother Walsh in Portsmouth, Virginia. Catherine lived there until about 1890 when she again went to Ohio to live with her half-sister Anna (Mrs. J. R. Clare in Portsmouth. She lived with Anna's family until 1908, then when Anna and her family moved to Columbus, Ohio, Catherine again moved to live with her half-brother Newton's family. She lived with them until her death from cancer in 1930. She is buried in the Horr family plot in Greenlawn Cemetery, Portsmouth, Ohio. Catherine's life could not have been a happy one. She was moved from family to family with little regard to her feelings and through no fault of her own. She never married. RLC: 1958 | Horr, Catherine (I33367)

The following is the biography of Catherine J. Walsh written by Robert Linn Clare. (Year unknown) Catherine J. Walsh She was the first wife of Philip H. Horr (formerly spelled Hore). She was born in Portsmouth, Virginia in 1834, the daughter of Mrs. Fanny Walsh of Manloves Place, 1st West Station. Father's name not known and presumed dead when the attached letters were written. She was living (June 1853) with her mother, brother Joseph and two marries sisters, Mrs. Lucy Ann Reynolds and Mrs. Fanny Forbes and their husbands, all in the same house in Portsmouth, Virginia when she met Philip H. Horr, her future husband. (See two letters) She married Philip in 1854 and died one year later, age 20, at childbirth, leaving a baby girl Catherine. (See letter of Philip to wife's mother regarding care of infant.) This letter of Philip's, dated September 17, 1855, written from Alexandria, Virginia, is particularly poignant, as it referred to his grief over the early loss of his young wife and it discussed the care of his baby daughter. He also included noted to the two married sisters and the brother Joseph. | Walsh, Catherine (I32812)

It contains biographies written by him, also letters and photographs and a xerox copy of the journal of Philip Henry Horr. Please contact her for further information. The following is the biography of Jacob Abner Wilhelm written by Robert Linn Clare in 1959. Jacob Abner Wilhelm Jacob was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia, April 5, 1797. His father was Michael Wilhelm, who came to this country from Germany at the age of seven years. This Michael is one of twin sons of a Baron George Wilhelm of Germany. Jacob's mother was Elizabeth ? Wilhelm who was married to Michael around 1790. There were seven children of this union; John, Adam, George, Jacob, Michael Jr., Catherine and Elizabeth. Jacob is reported planning a trip to New Orleans by way of the Ohio River and that while on his way, he stopped off at Franklin Furnace, Ohio a few miles up the river from Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio and while in Franklin Furnace, he met and married Amanda Melvina Day on June 5, 1829. Jacob and Amanda had five children; John, George, Mathilda, Maria and Belle. They lived in Franklin Furnace until his death, November 21, 1849 at age 52 years, 7 months and 16 days. This is inscribed on his gravestone, which was found in an old abandoned cemetery in Franklin Furnace. He is reported to have died as the result of an accident. In the record of the settlement of his estate, it shows that the doctor visited him six times during, October 16 to October 20 and one final visit November 15, before his death on November 21. This doctor lived across the Ohio River in Greenup, Kentucky and charged $1.00 for the trip to Jacob's home. Jacob was apparently relatively well to do for at the time of his death he owned a 118-acre farm with horses cows oxen, etc. and even had a side saddle for his wife to use. The attached courthouse records at the county seat, Portsmouth, Ohio, show the disposal of his estate by auction, as he left no will. See letters from Mable Macoy, who assisted with this genealogy, dated June 25 and December 3, 1958. The Michael Wilhelm noted above, was probably a Revolutionary War veteran as his name appears in the pension claims of Adam Unroe, Richard Morris and William Wintz. His age at that time was 18 years. This record appears on page 404, History of Rockbridge County, Virginia by Oren Morton. RLC: 1959 | Wilhelm, Jacob Abner (I3620)

It contains biographies written by him, also letters and photographs and a xerox copy of the journal of Philip Henry Horr. Please contact her for further information. The following is the biography of Matilda C. Wilhelm written by Robert Linn Clare. (Year unknown) Matilda C. Wilhelm She was born in Franklin Furnace, Ohio, one of five children of Jacob and Amanda Melvina Day Wilhelm, on January 19, 1834. The family moved to Portsmouth, Ohio, living at #9 West Fourth Street. There she met and married Philip H. Hore (later spelled Horr) on September 26, 1856. He was a widower of thirty. Following her wedding, she moved with her husband to Ironton, Ohio where three of her children were born: William, Harry and Newton. The latter two were identical twins. They lived in Ironton for four years to 1860, when her husband's health began to fail (tuberculosis) which necessitated their moving to a higher and healthier climate. They went to Zaleski, Ohio where her husband managed a charcoal iron furnace for the next four years. He died there rather suddenly of a lung hemorrhage on February 27, 1864, when only 38 years of age. Their fourth child, a daughter Anna, (later Anna Hore Clare) was born in Zaleski several months after the father's death. Mathilda and her four young children then returned to Portsmouth, Ohio to live in her old home with her widowed mother Amanda. Mathilda's stepchild, Catherine, who had been living with her in Zaleski, had to be returned to Portsmouth, Virginia to live again with her Grandmother Walsh. Mathilda's mother was then operating a boarding house for support and Mathilda helped and at the same time, struggled to give her children a proper education. She lived to see three of them happily married. She died December 8, 1891 and was buried in the Horr family plot in Greenlawn Cemetery, Portsmouth, Ohio. She was then 58 years of age. Her mother Amanda, survived her by only a few months. The record of her children is: William, born about 1857, married Ida Chick, had three children, Charles, William, and Arthur. Harry, born May 19, 1860, married Nancy B. King of Kentucky, no children. (One died in infancy). He died July 29, 1950. Newton, born May 19, 1860, married Clara Johnson of Kentucky, one child, Robert Johnson. Anna, born October 31, 1864, married James Robert Clare, six children. Mathilda's brother George Wilhelm won the Congressional Medal of Honor during his services in the Civil War, on May 16, 1863. Her life up to the time of her marriage was that of a normal, happy, although somewhat serious girl. She was married at age 22. Eight years later, at age 30, she was left a widow with four very young children to raise. In one of her letters written in later life to one Clement Doame, a close friend of her girlhood days, she told him of her family and early death of her husband and stated "I have since remained single, not caring ever to mingle with the world again - I devoted my entire life to bringing up my children." Her grandchildren knew her as "Tillie-ma" and her mother Amanda Melvina at "Mehi". Available are her personal album with names of many of her friends in Portsmouth, Ironton and vicinity, two letters in her handwriting and a photograph (tintype) of her a girl of twenty-two. 19265 | Information on this family was kindly contributed by descendant David Smith daibhidh(at)sympatico.ca [[ From David Smith daibhidh@sympatico.ca Feb 17, 2011 Hi Roz, Thank you for responding. I have lots on the Browns in New Brunswick, Canada including the following from thr 1871 census of Canada, Major Andre Brown age 45 (Major is his first name) Mary Ann age 48 wife- nee Ryan James H age 17 Mary J age 16 Caroline age 14 Archibald age 13 Eliza A age 9 From the above children Mary J married John Harry Browne and they stayed in Canada--I descend from them. Caroline married Benjamin Reading and I got this from the death record of Caroline who died in 1943 in Providence, R.I. I find no trace of these Readings in Rhode Island. Elizabeth A. (Eliza, Lizzie) married George E Horr--again I got this from the 1937 death record for Eliza in Providence, R.I. The mother of this family, Mary Ann (nee Ryan) also died in Providence R.I. on May 28 1908. According to the 1905 census of Rhode Island, Elizabeth states that she came to the U.S. in 1884. I have not been able to find the other children yet. I do not see this family on the 1881 census for Canada nor the 1880 census of the U.S. I have not found a death death record for Major so I don't know if he died in Canada or The U.S. Apparently there were other children including a Walter and an Isaiah, but have found nothing concrete to prove that. Elizabeth was my great great aunt as was Caroline, but I am having trouble finding any leads except for your family tree which includes George and Elizabeth. Any chance you can shed some light?
