1451 | [[ Obituary: The Orlando Sentinel - Apr 28, 2002 LEESBURG -- Maria C. Hoar played the piano on classical Chicago radio stations and on NBC's Artists' Showcase. But once she became a mother, she stepped out of the spotlight and focused on teaching rather than performing, so that she could spend time with her children. Hoar died of cancer Wednesday. She was 67. The daughter of two Indiana University music professors, Hoar began playing the piano at the age of 2. As an adult, she loved the music of Brahms and Beethoven. She taught the piano at home and at Roosevelt University and William Rainey Harper College, both in Illinois. "Mostly she taught protege-type students who were destined to major in music," said her daughter, Darlene Hawks of Springfield, Ohio. Hoar's other daughter, Denise Smith, plays the violin in the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Smith took up the violin at 9, a few years after her mother first started teaching her to play the piano. Smith described her mother as a "demanding but compassionate" music teacher. In 1993, Hoar moved to Lake County. She hadn't wanted to move there because her husband, Robert, had just been diagnosed with cancer. The couple had already signed a contract on their Florida home. Moving to Central Florida turned out to be a blessing for Hoar. "She made some awesome friends," Hawks said. Hoar lived at Highland Lakes and played the piano for the retirement community's musical group, accompanying residents singing show tunes. In addition to music, Hoar also enjoyed making ceramics and reading Agatha Christie mysteries. "She was also the best mother," Hawks said. "No matter how busy she was, she always had time to make sure we knew she loved us." She was a member of Morrison United Methodist Church of Leesburg. In addition to her daughters, survivors include two granddaughters and three sisters, Louisa Kellam of Sun City West, Ariz., Dorothea Snyder of Valparaiso, Ind.; Martha Chalos of Terre Haute, Ind. Arrangements are being made by American Family Funeral Center, Fern Park. Her mother's obituary: Naperville Sun, The (IL) - August 18, 2000 Deceased Name: Emma F. Jacobson Emma F.
