Modal

A Modal is the action of taking multiple STR test results and using them, with genealogical information of ancestry for each tester, to predict or make an educated guess as to the STR values that a common ancestor would likely have. Modal's are also often determined for more leaf-level branch points on the phylogenetic tree. By looking at the more unique values of the STR test results that exist in a Modal, one can create a matching template of a subset of values to scour for more possible descendants from that common branch point or ancestor. Using subset values of STR results, these templates are then also used to predict and report higher-level branch points (or Haplogroups) from the STR results.
