The first real personal Genetic Genealogy was introduced through the use of yDNA STR testing in 2000 by FTDNA. But oddly, it is the least well defined in terms of public databases documenting the markers. Even though there was much overlap in names in the early test panels from multiple companies, the markers themselves are not defined. While the first 111 markers are considered well named and use FTDNAs product names and order, the greatly expanded markers pulled out by FTDNA and yFull for use on their sites as a result of NGS are not defined anywhere. Not even clear if there is overlap in the names between the two companies. For some reason, yBrowse has chosen not to expand to include the STR markers.

There are a number of defined "multi-copy" markers. CDY being one more common one. Instead of reporting multi-copy markers based on physical, coordinate locations, they are generally reported in numeric order of their count. This happens for a number of reasons. One is, traditionally, the STRs are found via sanger sequencing panels. Such sequencing is using primers (like on microarray chips) to find the area of interest to then test for a marker. There are structural variations within the yDNA markers that can cause typical NGS results to get mapped incorrectly. Meaning the testers DNA is very different than the reference model depiction and so the testers results will not map well to reference. Also, many STRs are larger than the short read length common in NGS testing used in BigY and WGS. And so larger variations may not align properly to the reference model. For these reasons, some STR markers may not be accurately determined from NGS results. And sanger sequencing may not be able to accurately determine which location is reporting which count value. Hence, take the following table as a guide and not an absolute with regard to each STR and how it can be read from an NGS alignment file.

Early on, NIH discovered incorrect nomenclature being applied in various research papers. The same STR name was being used for different areas and defined with different counts. As a result, they started a site and table to define some early STR names. But this was not kept up as the reference model was refined and additional STR panels created.

This initial table of the first 111 STRs is taken from the BAMsaway browser plugin. It included 56 of the 600+ STRs from the BigY test and a few other unsourced ones as well.
