Deceased Name: Raymond Zardetto, Probation Officer, 78
Raymond A. Zardetto, former chief probation officer of the Passaic County Probation Department, Paterson, died Sunday. He was 78.
Born in Passaic, he lived in Clifton most of his life.
Mr. Zardetto retired in 1984 from the Passaic County Probation Department where he worked for 35 years.
Serving as chief from 1976 to 1984, he was responsible for expanding the county probation department to what it is today.
The 24-hour, seven-day-a-week bail unit and the diagnostic unit are credited to Mr. Zardetto.
"His longevity showed that doing the right thing was paramount to him," said his son, Raymond of Flemington. "He brought that same attitude from his 40-year career in the Army."
A World War II Army veteran, he was an Army Reservist through 1971, retiring with the rank of colonel.
He served in the North African and European Theaters where he commanded various prisoner of war camps.
At the end of the war, he had custody and was responsible for delivering Albert Speer to Nurenberg for the war crimes trials.
During his Army Reserve years, he was credited with drawing on his experiences with the probation department in drafting new regulations governing how the Army would treat its own prisoners -- including a work-release program.
Surviving are his wife, the former Evelyn Hoar; his son, Raymond O. of Flemington; two daughters, Dana Egreczky of Flemington and Sharon Aker of Caldwell; a brother, Ernest of Clifton; a sister, Doris Volker of California; and six grandchildren.
"As a father and a husband, he brought the same attitude he used in his work -- do everything the best way he could," said Raymond. "He taught us the same."
Bizub-Quinlan Funeral Home, 1313 Van Houten Ave., Clifton, is in charge of arrangements.
