      Rutland Herald (VT) - October 20, 1999
      Deceased Name: Allan Carroll Merritt Sr.
      Allan Carroll Merritt Sr., 74, died Monday in Rutland.
      He was born Sept. 18, 1925, in Rutland, son of E. Stanley and Ora (Bowen) Merritt. Mr. Merritt graduated from Rutland High School in 1943 and Norwich University in 1950. He was married to Beverly Hoar of Rutland on Sept. 30, 1950.
      He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II (1943-1946) in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations. He also served in the U.S. Army, 11th Airborne Division, 710th Tank Battalion, during the Korean War.
      He was employed by General Electric Co. in personnel administration for 20 years. He was also employed in insurance and real estate, having operated Merritt Insurance and Real Estate and Marvin Berger Insurance, and served as an independent broker. He also served as commissioner of public works for the city of Rutland from 1979-1981.
      He was active in local affairs and was elected to the Board of Aldermen from 1963-1967, and again from 1975-1979, serving as board president in 1978 and 1979.
      Mr. Merritt was past exalted ruler and a life member of Elks Lodge 345 in Rutland, and served as president of the Vermont State Elks Association in 1979-1980. He was a member of American Legion Post 31 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 648.
      He was always interested in athletic events and actively participated in football, basketball and baseball during his high school and college years.
      Survivors in addition to his wife are four sons, Allan C. Merritt Jr. of Burlington, William E. Merritt and Steven C. Merritt, both of Rutland, and James M. Merritt of Pittsford; a daughter, Lynn Burton of Rutland; seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Stanley R. Merritt and Howard B. Merritt.
      A funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Grace Congregational United Church of Christ. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Clifford Funeral Home. Members of the Rutland Lodge of Elks 345 will have a prayer service at 6 p.m.
