Obituary:
Marie Elizabeth Bedient, 90, formerly of Lancaster, died December 23, 2011 in Massachusetts where she had moved in 2002 to live near her family. Born in Levering, Michigan, Feb. 20, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Morton and Georgia (Schmalzried) Pangborn. As a young woman, she taught in a one-room schoolhouse in northern Michigan prior to attending Park College in Parkville, MO. On Nov. 28, 1943, she married Phillip E. Bedient; they celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary in 2011. She worked in the Admissions Office at the University of Michigan before moving with her husband and two children to Lancaster in 1959. She earned a BA from Millersville State College, was an active and valued member of the Grandview United Methodist Church, served for several years as the president of the Manheim Twp. Ambulance Association, read the newspaper on the Blind Association radio station, and was active in several programs in the Lancaster Council of Churches, including Night Ministry and local food banks. She played an active role in the Faculty Wives organization at Franklin and Marshall -College and served in the Infirmary Auxiliary.
She is predeceased by her brother, John C. Pangborn of Midland, MI, and is survived by her husband, Phillip of Dalton, MA; her son, Richard E. Bedient and his wife Elizabeth of Clinton, NY; and her daughter, Mary Bedient-Wood of Dalton. She is lovingly remembered and will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Kate Bedient and Christopher Barnes of Seattle, WA; Adam Bedient of Brooklyn, NY; Abigail and Lucas Polidoro of Dalton; Lydia and John Short of Boston, MA; and her great-grandson, Henry Phillip -Polidoro of Dalton.
A memorial service is planned for the spring at Grandview Church. Memorial donations may be made to the Lancaster Area Habitat for Humanity, 443 Fairview Ave., Lancaster, PA 17603.
