      Walter A. Hoar, 77, of 2 Richards St. died Monday in St. Vincent Hospital.
      He leaves two sisters, Mary F. Gibson of Worcester, and Margaret Rivers of Needham; and several nieces and nephews.
      Born in Worcester, he was a son of George F. and Mary F. (Ahaesy) Hoar, and had lived here all his life.
      Mr. Hoar worked in the accounting office of the U.S. Postal Service in Worcester for many years, retiring several years ago.
      He was a charter member of Post 341 American Legion for 45 years, a member of the Homer Wheaton VFW Post, a member of the Singletary Rod and Gun Club, and a member of the Worcester Lodge of Elks No. 243.
      Mr. Hoar was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
      He was a graduate of South High School, and a 1935 graduate of Clark University.
      The funeral will be held tomorrow from O'Connor Brothers, 592 Park Ave., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Peter's Church, 929 Main St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
      There are no calling hours.
      The family requests that flowers be omitted. Memorial contributions may be made instead to the American Cancer Society.
