LEWISTON - Algernon "Al" E. Collins Jr., 71, a resident of 201 Harmons Corner Road, Auburn, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, at St. Mary's d'Youville Pavilion, with family by his side after a long illness.
He was born in Portland, Sept. 16, 1937, the son of Algernon E. and Dolly (Copeland) Collins Sr. He attended Portland schools and then came to this area in 1972, where he met and married the former Eldora Goding. Al was employed 17 years at Etonic Shoe until their closing, and then retired from Morin Brick Co. in 2006.
He was an avid bowler and had achieved bowler of the month at Sparetime Recreation. He was also an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed camping for more than 20 years at Martin Stream Campground in Turner. He was also a great dancer. He was also "Mr. Fix-It" and was a welcome sight to family, friends and neighbors whenever anything needed to be fixed, and was an all-around good guy.
Traveling to Nashville, Branson, and North Carolina with good friends Mary and Eric, Bertie and Dennis, and Ron and Louise was something he and Eldora truly loved.
Survivors include his wife, Eldora of Auburn; their children, Algernon III and his wife, Allison, Michael and Lisa, Timothy and Debbie, Robert and Monique, David and his wife, Diane, Jody and Lottie, Judy and Scott, and Patrick and his wife, Krystal; his sisters, Georgia Thompson, Hazel Martin and Barbara Horr; 28 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
