      Deceased Name: John Connolly, 73, served city, state
      John J. "Jack" Connolly, 73, of 30 Langdon St., a retired tax examiner for the state in its office on Dwight Street, died Thursday evening at home.
      He retired in 1982 after 20 years with the state. Before that, he was a high school teacher in Amherst and Belchertown. He also taught at the Commerce Evening and Adult High School.
      Born in Springfield, he was a lifelong resident of this city and attended local schools. He served on the City Council from 1953 to 1961. He was a graduate of the former Technical High School and of American International College and received bachelor's and master's degrees in education.
      He was elected to the City Council in 1953 and served as its president in his final year.
      He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
      He was a former commander of the American Legion Brightwood Post 449 of Springfield and was a member of the John Boyle O'Reilly Club. He was also a member of the Retired State Employees Union, the Springfield Lodge of Elks 61, the Sons of Erin of Westfield, and the American Association for Retired Persons. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church.
      He leaves his wife of 50 years, the former Jane A. Clune; five sons, Kevin E. and Gregory J., both of Springfield, Terence E. of Ware, John J. Jr. of Granby, and Edward W. of Yonkers, N.Y.; a brother, Edward J. of West Springfield; two sisters, Linda Jo Fitzgerald and Rita F. Hoar, both of Springfield; and nine grandchildren. A daughter, Lina Ann Connolly, died in 1959.
      A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday morning at the church. There are no calling hours.
      At his request, his remains have been donated to Boston University Medical School for anatomical research. Edward F. O'Donnell & Phaneuf-McCarthy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
