      1931-2009
      SPRINGFIELD - Matthew "Fright" Joseph Ashe, 77, died March, 5 2009 at home after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Springfield on May 10, 1931 to the late Gregory M. Ashe and Nora (Hoar) Ashe. He attended Springfield Public Schools and was married 50 years to Beulah A. (Farrar) Ashe. Matt was employed by the City of Springfield as a heavy equipment operator for road construction and snowplowing, retiring in 1991. He took great pride in his home and garden, and was most happy when repairing things in his garage. In retirement he enjoyed his pastimes, family and friends, and his part time job at Gendon's Auto Parts. He was the brother of the late John Ashe and Gregory F. Ashe. He is survived by his brother Thomas Ashe of Clearwater, FL; his sisters Marion Doyle, Irene O'Connor, and Catherine Thompson, all of Longmeadow, and Barbara Patinka of Plattsburgh, NY. He was the proud father of Matthew J. Ashe, Jr. of Foxboro; Kenneth F. Ashe of Tampa, FL; Raymond M. Ashe of Belchertown; Rosemary E. Lee of Hampden; and Marjorie J. Keeley of Springfield; and happy grandfather of 5. Family and friends are invited to meet for calling hours on Monday March 9th from 3-6PM at the Byron Funeral Home, 1858 Allen St., Springfield followed by a Funeral Home Service at 6PM. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
