Deceased Name: Gale Q. Best Sr.
Funeral services for Gale Q. Best Sr., 79, of Lake Summerset, Ill., formerly of Hoffman Estates for 24 years, were held May 24 at Ahlgrim & Sons Funeral Home, Schaumburg.
Mr. Best died May 21 after a lengthy illness due to hepatitis C, a disease he had contracted from blood transfusions prior to 1992 when hepatitis C was made known. He was born Nov. 19, 1922, in Chicago. He graduated from Lane Tech High School in Chicago. He was a singing messenger for Western Union and participated in the manufacturing of plastic football helmets at the John Riddell Co. in Chicago. Unfortunately, the helmets were way before their time and the process was discontinued.
Mr. Best joined the Army Air Corps in January 1941, serving in the 8th Air Force and 9th Troop Carrier Command in England and France. He was honorably discharged at the end of World War II as staff sergeant with the Distinguished Air Medal, serving as flight engineer and crew chief for B-17s and B-24s in the European theatre. After the war, he worked as crew chief at Skymotive, O'Hare Field, and was also employed as a driver/salesman at Shell Oil Co., Argo and Des Plaines, with 28 years of service prior to his retirement in 1982. Mr. Best moved into his beloved home in Lake Summerset in 1996.
Mr. Best married Winifred Brokenshire April 14, 1945, at St. Cleer Liskeard, Cornwall, England. They divorced in 1958 in Cook County. She died in 1989 in Port Charlotte, Fla. He married Judith Horr of Florissant, Colo., on March 31, 1961, in Western Springs, Ill. They divorced June 21, 1971, in Chicago. He married Jeanne Marie (Vogel) Phillips June 22, 1974, in Niles, Ill.
Mr. Best is also survived by four children, Faith Evis Folkes of Schaumburg, Gale Q. "Skip" Jr. (Susan) of Hoffman Estates,[Judith's children: Patricia Marion (Gary Powell) Best of Victor, Colo., and C.A. Michael (Vicki) Best of Theresa, Wis.; ] a stepson, Scott J. Phillips (Kathy Griffin) of Algonquin; grandchildren Todd E. (Machielle Lang) Folkes of Lake in the Hills, Scott E. Folkes, Chadd E. (Missy) Folkes of Palatine, James Q. of Hoffman Estates, Laura (Randy) Novak Jr. of Lockport, Ill., Nicholas A. and Jacklyn Rose Best of Theresa, Wis.; stepgrandchildren Sean A. Phillips of New Port Richy, Fla., and Jennifer Griffin and Taylor Colten Phillips of Algonquin; great-grandchildren Stacey Folkes of Lake in the Hills, Anthony Folkes of Centerville, Mo., and Quintin Ryan Folkes of Palatine; a brother, LeRoy (Mary) of San Diego, Calif.; a sister, Joyce (Lowell) Knudsen of Mundelein; many nieces and nephews; and special daughter, Ronna K. Larson of Schaumburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Evis (nee Levin).
Burial was in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Garden of the Apostles, Arlington Heights. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, 8354 Foster Ave., Norridge IL 60706
