SYLACAUGA ? Funeral service with full military honors for Walter Gurvus Ragsdale, 84, will be Saturday, Aug. 2, at 9 a.m. at Radney-Smith Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Rouse, the Rev. James Beam and the Rev. Bill Lollar officiating. Interment will be at 2 p.m. at Emeus Cemetery in Cullman County. The body will lie in state at Emeus Baptist Church in Cullman County from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday. Mr. Ragsdale died July 31, 2008 at Coosa Valley Medical Center. He was a member of Westside Church of God. He retired after ministering the gospel in the Church of God in Alabama, Mississippi and Kentucky for some 60 years. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy after serving in World War II on the U.S.S. South Dakota in the Pacific Theatre. After retiring from the ministry, he worked at Southern Alloy for about four years. He then worked at Piggly Wiggly for some six years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Alldredge Ragsdale; mother and father, Bessie and Marvin Ragsdale; and brothers, Hershel, Little J.C. and Roy Ragsdale. Survivors are his wife of 30 years, Annie Lee Ragsdale of Sylacauga; son, Jerry Ragsdale and wife Juanita of Summit, MS; brother, Dwight Ragsdale of White Bluff, Tenn.; sisters, Vera Thornton and husband Welcome of Cullman, Vola Graves of Bolivar, Tenn., Vonnie Grayson and husband Clarence of Lincoln Park, MI, and Sue Horr of Orlando, FL; grandchildren, Teresa Lollar and husband Bill, Tammy Field and husband Craig, Renee Latham and husband Kenny, Billy Herren and wife Kim, Brandi Hood and husband Tim and Tonya Olive; great grandchildren, Amanda Field, Rachael Morrison and husband Jeremy, Billy Lollar III, Kayla Latham, T.J. Hood, Brandon Hood, Michael Hood, Hannah Olive, Colton Herron, Jessica Olive and Carson Herron; great-great grandchildren, Madilyn Field and Morgan Field. Visitation will be Friday, Aug. 1, from 5-9 p.m. Memorial messages may be sent to the family at www.radneysmith.com. The family will accept flowers or contributions to Westside Church of God. Radney-Smith Funeral Home will direct the service.

55, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., formerly of Decatur, died Saturday (July 19, 1997) in his home from cancer.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in College Hill Church of the Nazarene, Nashville, Tenn. Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in Woodfin Memorial Chapel, Murfreesboro. Burial will be 4 p.m. in Dickson Memorial Gardens. Memorials in memory of Dr. Ragsdale may be made to the Roy Ragsdale Memorial Fund at Trevecca Nazarene University or Hospice of Murfreesboro.
Dr. Ragsdale was a native of Cullman, Ala., son of late Marvin and Bessie Wren Ragsdale. Dr. Ragsdale was retired superintendent of Rutherford County schools and was a member of the College Hill Church of the Nazarene. He was former superintendent of Decatur School District 61. He was a member of the Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi, Who's Who in the Midwest, American Association of School Administrators, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Illinois Association of School Administrators, Kentucky Association of School Administrators, Kentucky Association of School Superintendents, Kentucky Educational Leadership Institute and Decatur Leadership Institute.
Surviving are his wife, Cheryl Lloyd Ragsdale; daughters, Kimberlee Ann Buie and Angela Lynn Ragsdale of Nashville; son, James Paul of Columbia, Mo.; other family members including Sheri Hunter of Kennesaw, Ga.; Jan Wood of Florissant, Mo.; Rhonda Glossip of Nixa, Mo.; brothers, W.G. of Sylacauga, Ala.; J. Dwight of White Bluff, Tenn.; H.E. of Lincoln Park, Mich.; sisters, Sue Horr of Orlando, Fla.; Vonnie Grayson of Lincoln Park; Vera Thornton and Vola Graves of Cullman, Ala.
