Harrison Z. Horr committed suicide last Thursday morning, by shooting himself. Mr. Horr had been a little unsettled in his mind since Spring, yet not enough to be noticed except by his own family or intimate friends. On Thursday morning he told his wife that he had a mind to go up in the bushes a short distance and see if he could find some partridges; he accordingly took his double-barreled shot-gun and started. Not long after his wife heard the report of a gun, and not feeling easy about him, went to the next door neighbor's, Mr. Stratton's, and they, not thinking there was anything wrong, delayed going in search of Mr. H. for some time, but on going in the direction from which the report of the gun came, found him in the bushes near the roadside, dead. He had discharged both barrels of his gun by tying a string to a bush, connecting the string to the trigger, and placing the muzzles against his heart, leaned back and the contents of both barrels entered his heart, causing instant death without any doubt. Mr. Horr was 34 years of age, and leaves a family.
As told by Robert Lord Keyes, Pelham Library, in a letter dated April 30, 2004:
Harrison Z. Horr [1842-1876] is a real story. He was in Civil War service in Louisiana with his brother Charles Henry Horr [1835-1864] in 1864. One evening the Confederates attacked, or threatened to. The Massachusetts unit split into two to probe the lines. Each unit came upon other soldiers in the dark and, thinking them the enemy, engaged. But it was the other unit. Harrison was with one group and Charles was with the other-and Charles was killed in the subsequent firefight. Later, it was said that Harrison blamed himself for his brother's death and was "insane.' On Sept. 28, 1876, he shot himself with a gunshot near his house on Pelham Hollow Road, dying instantly. We have his widow's pension papers which documents this these facts. It is an extraordinary set of papers to read. Harrison had no children and his wife, Hannah M. Smith Horr [1842-1927], never remarried.
