Garrett, a son of John Van Riper (1809-1848) and Clarissa Hoard (1813-1865), entered service in Co. F, 38th Indiana Infantry on Sept. 30, 1864. He mustered out April 6, 1865. He saw prior service in Co. K, 87th Indiana Infantry from July 30, 1862 to Jan. 17, 1863.
Van Riper married Miss Elizabeth Lovina Wood (1843-1930) on Feb. 27, 1858. Together they had the following children: John Wesley (1859-1860), Flora E. (1862-1866), Emma Jane (1864-1950), Ermina M. (1867-1936), William H. (1869-1958), James N. (1871-1965), Bertha A. (1873-1907), Mary E. (1872-1925), Sarah I. (1877-1951), Urly Ida (1879-1880), George A. (1880-1921), James Earl (1883-1936), Charles G. (1885-1949), Baby Boy (1887-1887), and Robert W. (1888-1973). The Van Riper's lived in Beaver Twp., Butler Co., Iowa at the time of the 1910 U.S. Census.
Garrett applied for a veteran's invalid pension on March 13, 1879 (app. #272,300 cert. #185,735).
