1956-2008
HOLYOKE - Michael Andrew Hoar, of Holyoke, was called safely home after a courageous battle with complications stemming from a bone marrow transplant. He was surrounded by his family at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He worked for the past 9 years at U.S. Tsubaki, where he was active in the local Steelworkers Union, serving as Vice-President. He was an avid New England sports fan, never missing a Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins, or Celtics game. He also served in the United States Army from 1974 to 1978. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the medical staff at Mass General Hospital, Holyoke Medical Center, and all who participated in Michael's care. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Kathryn (Judd) Hoar, his children: Krystal and her husband Jorge Ayala of Westfield, Kathryn and her wife Erika Diaz of Holyoke, and GM1 Michael Hoar, stationed with the Navy in Groton CT, two brothers: John of Easthampton and Jeffrey of Easthampton, six sisters: Verda Hess of Westfield, Maria O'Brien of Chicopee, Pamela Bergeron of Holyoke Joanne Dennis of Chicopee, Jacquelyn Pitoniak of Huntington, and Jennifer Wilda of Holyoke, 14 grandchildren, whom he loved dearly, as well as several nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins, aunts and uncles. Michael was predeceased by his parents, John and Verda (LaFlamme) Hoar and a niece Tanya Dennis. A funeral service will be held Tuesday morning at 11:30 in the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street. Burial will follow at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. Calling hours will be held Monday from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Michael's name to the Bone Marrow Program at Massachusetts General Hospital, C/O Dr. Karen Ballen, Emerson Place, Boston MA 02114.
