Obituary:
Mrs. Laura Hoard Beck, 78, of 861 N. Main Street, prominent in church and patriotic organizations in the city, died at 2:45 p.m. Thursday, at her home. She was the widow of William L. Beck, who died Dec. 26, 1962.
Mrs. Beck was very active in the First Methodist Church and a member of the W.S.C.S. and Johnston Bible Class. She was one of the organizers and a charter member of the auxiliary of Samuel M. Porter Camp., Spanish American War Veterans, and the Auxiliary of John W. Tiffany Post, V.F.W., serving as first president of both. She also was a charter member and first president of the Parent-Teacher Association at Samuel G. Love School.
Her affiliations, also included the Fanny O. Bailey W.C.T.U.; Harmony Circle, King's Daughtrs; Mecca Chapter, Order of Eastern star; and Scottish Rite Auxiliary.
Mrs. Beck was born June 9, 1883, in Conewango Township, the daughter of Jesse and Ilona Whitmore Hoard. She had resided in Jamestown about 60 years.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Lawrence J. (Wilma) Larson, Pasadena, Calif; four grandchildren, Douglas, Julia Ann, David, and Robert Larson, all of Pasadena, Calif; one brother, A. Lee Hoard, North Main Street Extension, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Carl, Earl, and Ned Hoard.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Christ Chapel of first Methodist Church. the Rev. Dr. James M. McIntosh, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Fluvanna Cemetery.
