WALPOLE - Robert F. Gearty, 81, a World War II Coast Guard veteran, died May 8 in his home.
Mr. Gearty was born in Winchester. He lived in Norwood for 41 years before moving to South Walpole.
He worked as a shoe salesman for the family owned Gearty Shoe Store in downtown Norwood. The store closed in 1977, when he began working for Olkens Shoe in Wellesley, and then Michaelson's in Lexington. He retired in 1985.
He was a past grand knight of the Norwood Knights of Columbus Council No. 252, and also served as the president of the building and golf committees for the council.
Mr. Gearty leaves his wife, Teresa M. (Paquin) Walsh; two daughters, Lianne of Raynham and Mary E. of Sandwich; a son, Robert F. Jr. of Hull; four stepchildren, Frank L. Walsh Jr. of Dunwoody, Ga.; Carolyn J. Szafranski of Huntington, Dianne M. Hoar of Yarmouthport, and Donna C. McCann of Walpole; three brothers, Harold C. of Allenstown, N.H., and Herbert V. and Arthur, both of Norwood; three sisters, Margaret O'Neil of North Carolina, Barbara Pollick of Cranford, N.J., and Joanne Gillis of Norwood; and 13 grandchildren.
