Hoar, 78, retired firefighter SPRINGFIELD - Edmund J. Hoar, 78, of 81 Dorset St., a longtime city firefighter died Friday in Mercy Medical Center. He was a 30-year firefighter for the Springfield Fire Department and retired in 1985. He worked in the Winchester Square Station, the North Main Street Station, the Pine Street Station and retired from the Sumner Avenue Station. Edmund J. Hoar, 78, of 81 Dorset St., a longtime city firefighter died Friday in Mercy Medical Center. He was a 30-year firefighter for the Springfield Fire Department and retired in 1985. He worked in the Winchester Square Station, the North Main Street Station, the Pine Street Station and retired from the Sumner Avenue Station. Born in Springfield, he was a lifelong resident and a graduate of the former Technical High School. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council, 2212 of West Springfield and the John Boyle O'Reilly Club of Springfield. He was a Army Air Forces veteran of World War II and served as a technical sergeant. He served in northern France, Ardennes, central Europe and the Rhineland. He received the Air Metal with four oak leaf clusters and the European-African-Middle East Theater Campaign Ribbon. He leaves his wife of 53 years, the former Mary E. Ferriter; two sons, James E. of East Longmeadow and John M. of Pembroke; a daughter, Ann Alfieri of Springfield; a brother, Maurice of Springfield; and four grandchildren. The funeral service will be Monday morning at Forastiere Smith Funeral Home of East Longmeadow and in the Holy Name Church, with burial in St. Michael's Cemetery.
