John Hoar married Alice Sidney not Lisle
Posted by: Rinnah Burns Date: March 05, 2008
I was sent information from the Graves Family Newsletter of 2002 --pages 12-16.
In it the Editor's note states that John Hoar married Alice Sidney, daughter of Philip Sidney and Lady Alice (Maiden Name Unknown) Sidney.
I have found the Sidney Family of Robert Sidney and Barbara Gamage to be the closest line Alice Sidney who married John Hoar.
Robert and Barbara Gamage Sidney had 11 children.
One was Alice Sidney b. 1605--brother was Philip Sidney b. 1590 who is the father of Alice Sidney (Lady Lisle) who married John Hoar.
Their sister Philippa married John Hobart brother of Mary Elizabeth Hobart who married John Lisle.
Philip Sidney's brother Robert b. 1595 was the father of Algernon Sidney who was friends with Lady Alicia Beacomsawe Lisle--Algernon and Lady Alicia were beheaded on the same day.
Typhena Lisle married Leonard Hoar brother of John Hoar.
Robert Sidney b. 1563 Viscount Lisle
      Barbara Gamage b.1565
      Children were
Philippa Sidney b. 1599 married John Hobart, brother of Mary Elizabeth Hobart who married Lord John Lisle.
Robert Sidney b. Dec 1, 1595 son was Algernon Sidney who was friends with Lady Alicia Beacomsawe Lisle--Algernon and Lady Alicia were beheaded the same day.
Philip Sidney b. 1590--daughter Alice Sidney (Lady Lisle)--grandfather Robert was Viscount Lisle-married John Hoar
Mary Sidney b. 1586 married Sir Robert Wroth--she wrote poetry Very Famous
      Elizabeth Sidney b. 1602
      William Sidney b. 1585
Catherine Sidney b.1597 married Lewis Mansel
Barbara Sidney b. 1600 married 1. Thomas Smythe 2. Thomas Colepepper
      Bridget Sidney b. 1604
      Henry Sidney b.1587
      Alice Sidney b. 1605

Sir Robert Sidney b.Nov 19, 1563 was given the Title of Viscount Lisle in 1605. I think this is where the confusion came in on the Lisle name. Alice daughter of Philip Sidney would be Lady Alice Sidney Lisle--but Lisle in this case is a Title not a surname.
Now it is understandable why F. Phelps Leach and his sister Elizabeth M. Leach Rixford made this mistake.
All these familes of Sidney, Hobart, Hoar, Lisle were all related either by marriage and Royal Blood cousins.

We can thank F. Phelps Leach and his sister Elizabeth M. Leach Rixford for the myth that the wife of John Hoar was Alice Lisle. His work on the Hungerford family postulated that Alice was a [?Lisle]. His sister removed the brackets and question mark. No one challenged them for years. The evidence through the Lisle family do NOT show a dau named Alice that married John Hoar.
