Obituary:

Ralph Wayne Wehmhoff, a 38-year
resident of Westport, CT, passed away
Monday, October 24th, 2005. He was 76.
Born in Pateros, Washington, Ralph spent
his childhood in Winthrop and Tacoma
Washington where he graduated from
Stadium High School in 1947. He attended
the University of Puget Sound where he
was class president in his junior and senior
years, Homecoming King and achieved
entry into ?iWho?is Who.?i He was also a
member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, earned the First Year
Service Award, was awarded the Amphictyon Society Cup and
served as the Sigma Chi President of Intercollegiate Knights.
Ralph graduated in 1951, with a B.A. in Business Administration.
While attending university, Ralph enlisted in the Naval
Reserve and in 1952, he requested active duty to serve his
country during the Korean conflict. He was assigned to the
aircraft carrier USS Princeton CV37 where he served in
communications for two tours of the western Pacific stationed off
the coast of Korea. He was also a boxer on the USS Princeton
where he held an undefeated title. Devoted to his country, its
veterans and the U.S. military services, he stayed in touch with
his fellow servicemen throughout his lifetime.
Ralph met his wife of 51 years, Marlene, in 1951, while aboard
the USS Princeton in Long Beach, CA prior to his first tour of
duty. They were married July 10, 1954, in Bell, CA. Upon his
completion of service and honorable discharge from the Navy in
1954, Ralph accepted a position with St Regis Paper Company
and he and his wife moved to Tacoma, WA. Ralph enjoyed a
distinguished sales and marketing career in the pulp and paper
industry and settled in Westport in 1967. St. Regis became
Champion International Paper from which Ralph retired after
47 years of loyal service. He was also an active member of the
Association of American Wood Pulp Importers. A member of the
Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) and the Ancient Free and
Accepted Masons of Illinois, Ralph was an active volunteer for,
and supporter of, organizations such as the Special Olympics
and Red Cross. Over his lifetime he personally gave more than
21 gallons of blood to the Red Cross Blood Drive. He served on
the Westport Planning and Zoning committee, was a past
president of the Staples Booster Club, and participated in the
establishment of the Veterans War Memorial in downtown
Westport. Ralph delighted in making people smile. He
completed clown school and joined the Ha-Ha Group as the
clown persona ?iDr. Humor,?i bringing cheer and levity to many
hospitalized or infirmed. For many years around Christmastime,
he could be found delivering gifts to hospitals and special
institutions dressed as Santa Claus. Ralph enjoyed the
company of his family and friends, and was a devoted husband,
father, and grandfather.
Ralph is survived by his loving wife, Marlene; his daughter,
Marilyn Gula; sons, Wayne Wehmhoff and Dale Wehmhoff and
their spouses Jennifer and Cheryl; and five grandchildren,
Bryan, Kelcie, Kyle, Elaine and Robert. He is also survived by
his sister, Ruth Corbaly and her husband Arthur; sister-in-law,
Merle Wehmhoff; mother-in-law, Mildred Hoar; and sister-in-law,
Lynne Hoar; and many nieces and nephews. He was
predeceased by his parents, Lester and Mildred; his brother,
George Wehmhoff; and son-in-law, Duff Gula.
Calling hours will be from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday,
November 2nd, 2005, at Harding Funeral Home, 210 Post Road
East in Westport. Services will take place at Green?es Farms
Congregational Church, 71 Hillandale Road, Westport, at
10:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 3rd, followed by a reception
for friends at his home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that
memorial donations be made to the University of Puget Sound,
