HOAR: Maria Bemiss Hoar: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
Richmond Times-Dispatch (VA) - August 21, 2001
Deceased Name: HOAR: Maria Bemiss Hoar
Maria Bemiss Hoar, widow of Henry Charles Hoar, died on August 19, 2001 at Westminster-Canterbury, which with St. Paul's Episcopal Church, was one of the many communities of people uplifted and made beautiful by her radiant hope, faith and love. She was born in Richmond on September 26, 1907, the youngest child of Cyane Dandridge Williams and Eli Lockert Bemiss. Brothers and sisters who preceded her in death were Samuel, John and Lockert Bemiss, Charlotte Bemiss Daniel, Frances Bemiss Mason, Catharine Bemiss McGuire and Cyane Bemiss Crump. Mrs. Hoar attended the Stratford and Collegiate Schools and graduated from Sweetbriar College. She is survived by her three children, Thomas Charles Dandridge of Grand Rapids, Mich., Cyane Bemiss Lowden of Richmond and Catharine B. Penson of Lake Wylie, S.C.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Despite a series of physical hardships, Mrs. Hoar was indomitable in her generous enrichment of the spirits of others, whose need she always saw as being greater than her own. In her final days, her spirit was as ethereal as ever and her only sorrow was being unable to visit sad and lonely friends. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 25, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church and at 2 p.m. Monday, August 27, at Westminster-Canterbury. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 901 E. Grace St., Richmond, Va. 23219, to the Westminster-Canterbury Foundation, 1600 Westbrook Ave., Richmond, Va. 23227, or to Maymont Foundation, 1700 Hampton St., Richmond, Va. 23220.
