Email from Eduardo - Sept 2011
"My name is Eduardo Alexis N?ater Ramos, ....My 4th great grandfather was Charles Alexander Hoard from New York, son of Silvius Hoard. Charles Alexander came to Puerto Rico as a diplomat, being consul of the United States and other nations for some time. According to several records I have discovered, he lived in San Juan and was a merchant also having some involvement in the sugar industry. He had (to my knowledge) two daughters with Juliana Moreno named Jovita (my 3rd great grandmother) and Angela. They never married but they were recognized by him as his daughters and were given his surname. I have several records (all in Spanish) that confirm this and I'm quite excited to have been able to do so. From what I've seen, there is not much light on Charles Alexander and that is all explained by the fact that he moved to Puerto Rico and records are not quite available or are not searchable since they are all in Spanish. It was not until 1898 that Puerto Rico became a US territory and by then, he had died. The first available US federal census that is available for us is the 1910 census. You might also notice that there are quite a few names in our given names. The reason is that in most regions of Spanish cultural origins, both surnames (father's and mother's) are used. In my case, my name and middle name are Eduardo Alexis, my father's last name is N?ater and my mother's is Ramos."
