Obituary:
J. Hoar Jr. 1927-2008 HOLYOKE - John J. Hoar, Jr., 80, of West Holyoke, died Sunday, May 18, 2008 at the Holyoke Medical Center. He was born in Holyoke, son of the late John J. and Anne (O'Sullivan) Hoar, and was educated in Holyoke's Parochial Schools. John was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II, serving aboard the U.S.S. Antietam, and he was the recipient of the WWII Victory medal, the American Area medal, the Asiatic Pacific medal, and the Good Conduct medal. After the war was employed as a Civil Engineer for more than thirty years at Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee, retiring in 1985. He was a member of the Holyoke Lodge of Elks #902 and the Mass. Morgan Horse Association. His wife, Verda (LaFlamme) Hoar died on September 13, 2000. John is survived by his children, Verda Hess, John Hoar III, Maria O'Brien, Mike Hoar and his wife Katherine, Pamela Bergeron and her husband Douglas, Jo-Anne Dennis, Jeffrey Hoar and his wife Lynn, Jacquelyn Pitoniak and her husband James, and Jennifer Wilda and her husband Robert, nineteen grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, a brother, James Hoar, a sister, Mary Armata and her husband Ted, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Francis Hoar, a sister, Carol Durocher, a granddaughter, Tanya Denis, and a son-in-law, John O'Brien. A Funeral Home Service will be held Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. in the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, Holyoke. Burial will follow at St. Jerome Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Holyoke Soldiers Home, 110 Cherry Street, Holyoke, MA 01040 or to the American Cancer Society , 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.
