      Obituary:
      SANFORD - Retired Army Staff Sgt. Joseph Nelson Hoar Jr., 80, of Sanford, passed away Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010. He was born and raised in Burnham, Pa., Sept. 30, 1930. He entered the Army on Aug. 11, 1949, and was a highly decorated veteran, serving in both the Vietnam and Korean wars, earning numerous awards for his valor. He served his country for 23 years, retiring on Feb. 1, 1972, from the 612th Quartermaster Company of Fort Bragg. Amongst other things, he served as canteen manager at the VFW Post 9103 for seven years and was a lifetime member. He then was employed as a mail distribution clerk at Fort Bragg FTCC for five years, until his final retirement in 1993. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Nelson Hoar; his mother, Mary Elizabeth Hoar; and a sister, Barbara Snook. He is survived by his wife, Elva A. Hoar of the home; daughter, Irene Snook Smithwick; two stepsons; sister, Norma Shepherd of Lewistown, Pa.; brother, Johnny Hoar; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his grandson, Joseph Smithwick and wife Heidi Smithwick; grandson, Patrick Smithwick and wife Tammy Smithwick; granddaughter, Crystal Smithwick Sutton and husband Danny Sutton; and nine great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at Adcock Funeral Home & Crematory in Spring Lake from 6 to 8 tonight, Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010. Graveside services will take place at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake, Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010, at noon. After the services, friends and family are invited to attend an additional memorial service at the VFW Post 9103 in Spring Lake.
