Deceased Name: JOHN J. HOGAN, EX-BUFFALO POLICE LIEUTENANT
A memorial Mass for John J. Hogan, a former Buffalo police lieutenant and an investigator for the state Racing and Wagering Board, will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Martin's Catholic Church, 1140 Abbott Road. The Mass will be offered by his cousin, the Rev. Richard Hoar.
Hogan, 69, died Monday (Feb. 22, 1993) in Buffalo General Hospital following a brief illness.
A Buffalo native, he attended St. Thomas Aquinas School and St. Ann's Business School. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1942 to 1946 and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands during World War II.
In 1953, Hogan began a long association with horse racing and police work.
He joined Buffalo Raceway as a cashier and later was named assistant to the track manager. He left the raceway in 1990 when he became an investigator for the New York State Racing and Wagering Board.
Hogan was a state trooper from 1953 to 1955, when he joined the Buffalo Police Department. He was a desk lieutenant until 1963, when he joined the staff of the Common Council. He retired from the city in 1985.
Hogan was Erie County commander of the American Legion in 1960. He was a member of South Buffalo Post 721 and Coast Guard Post 1529, American Legion.
While a Buffalo police officer, he was treasurer of the Erie Club. He was a member of the Association of Former New York State Troopers and was active in its Helping Hands program.
He is survived by two sisters, Teresa Weber of Pittsford and Marie Culligan, and two brothers, William and Paul.
