On April 25, 1832, the Plymouth County Probate Court judged Edward Durfee, of Middleboro, Plymouth County, MA, to be insane. His next of kin was his son Edward. He owned a blacksmith shop in Middleboro, Plymouth County, MA, and Job Hoar was named as guardian. Plymouth County Probate Record 6909. He apparently recovered or at least improved for a time as he was listed with his family in 1840 and 1850.

On July 1, 1854, Edward B. Durfee, of Rochester, Plymouth County, MA, was judged incompetent by the Plymouth Court and Nathan H. Barstow was appointed guardian.
