Notes - In Early Settlers of New York: "Samuel Smith of Spencertown, Columbia
County New York, married Abigail Wright, daughter of John Wright. Samuel
was a brother of Isaac, Elijah, Elkanah, Bial, Silas, Cornelius, Rachel,
Sally and Hannah. (Cornelius had a son Darius Smith, b. September 9, 1794
at Pittstown, Rensselaer County, New York)." Lydia his daughter married
Luther Schillinger and moved to Missouri, Mercy married Henry Millard.
Polly married Dr. William Priest."
From the Ancestors of Graeme Norman and Margarie Miller, source: Paul
Smith "Samuel Smith was buried in Fales Cemetery, Henderson, New York. He
died at the home of his son, Sylvester in Henderson, New York. He
married in Claverack or New Canaan, New York. (Old Colony Historical
Manuscript, Taunton, Bristol, Massachusetts, probably written in the
1880's)
Samuel was the sixth or seventh son of Jasial Smith. His parents died in
1757 or shortly before when he was no more than 14. He was in Columbia
County New York by 1772, when he was about 29, when He married Abigail
Wright. The family lived at Spencertown, Kinderhook, and Green River, in
Columbia County, New York, probably in that order. He was a farmer and
perhaps did not own h is own land, as no deeds have been found. Shortly
after 1800 his children moved to Jefferson County, New York, which was
just then opening up for settlement and where land was probably available
cheaply. He spent the last years with his son Sylvester at Henderson,
Jefferson County, New york, probably going there sometime after 1820.
Samuel is said to have served in the American Revolution. He was married
and had started a family at the beginning of the war.
Charles Clark of Adams, New York, has a snuff box that belonged to Samuel
which has passed down through Samuel's son Sylvester Smith Jr.
The gravestone of Samuel Smith in Fales Cemetery (also known as Clark
Cemetery in Henderson, Jefferson, County, New York, has been seen and
photographed by several descendants. About 1980, it had fallen and
broken and Charles Clark of Adams took it home for the winter. It has
perhaps since been restored."
