The following is the biography of Anna Horr written by Robert Linn Clare in 1962.
Anna Horr
She was born in Zaleski, Ohio on October 31, 1864.
Her parents, Philip H. and Matilda Wilhelm Horr, had moved to Zaleski (1860) from Ironton, Ohio to get to a more healthful climate as her father was then suffering from tuberculosis.
She never saw her father as he died at age 38, several months before she was born. Her mother, with her four children, three boys and the infant girl, then moved back to her original home in Portsmouth, Ohio at 9 West Fourth Street to live with her widowed mother, Amanda Day Wilhelm (1864).
Her girlhood was spent in this home under somewhat difficult financial conditions. She attended Public Schools and High School and was graduated from High School in 1883.
She married James Robert Clare February 3rd, 1884 and started housekeeping in their home at 8th and Washington Sts., Portsmouth, Ohio. Six children were born to them:
James David, December 18, 1885, died Boston, Mass. September 1937, buried Byers plot, cemetery Washington D.C. He was married to Ruby Byers who died in 1960. Three children.
Alice Bentley, May 1, 1887, not married, Indianapolis, Indiana
Robert Linn, October 18, 1888, married Helen Walsh 1913.
Sarah Ross, September 19, 1890, died pneumonia January 29, 1892, buried Greenlawn Cemetery, Portsmouth, Ohio.
Howard Horr, November 25, 1892, married Ethel Clune 1920, four children, Terre Haute, Indiana.
Doris Hortense, July 28, 1899, married Jas. T. Stewart 1919, two children, died March 9, 1958, buried Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis.
In 1894, they moved into the Clare Homestead at 8th and Chillicothe Sts. to look after her husband's father, whose wife, Sarah Jane, had just died. They lived there ten years, during which time the husband's father J.D. Clare died (1898). They moved back to their original home in 1904 and lived there until 1908, then moved to Columbus, Ohio 19 West Frambies Ave. as her two older boys were then attending Ohio State University there. Their next move was to Indianapolis, Indiana as two of the boys, James and Howard were working there and Linn was in Perth Amboy, N.J. This was in 1914.
Her husband died at their home at 35 West 33rd St. in Indianapolis, Indiana and she continued to live there with one unmarried daughter Alice, until her death from cancer on July 30th, 1938. She is buried in the Clare family plot Greenlawn Cemetery, Portsmouth, Ohio, along with her husband and infant daughter, Sarah.
She was a proud, loving, loyal and wonderful wife and mother, through good times and bad, never complaining and always interested in and ambitious for her husband and children.
The first twenty years of her married life were free of financial worries, as the Clare families were relatively prosperous. Her husband's father, J. D. Clare was considered a successful and wealthy industrialist. Business reverses and the financial depression of 1906 wiped out most of this wealth and her final years were not so easy.
Photographs and letters in her handwriting are attached.
One of her letters written to her son, Linn, on September 22, 1937, is typical of her pride, courage and abiding love in her children. It was written while she was suffering the pain of cancer (she called it arthritis) and it was in regard to the impending death of her first born, James David, from diabetes in Boston, Mass. She died a few months later.
