TEMPLE - Arline Keene Hoar, 71, died on Jan. 7, with courage, a victim to stenosis, or destruction of her spinal cord and back bone.
Born in West Turner and delivered by Doc Atwood, of Buckfield, she was the daughter of Clarence E. and Nellie J. Tupai Keene.
She matured there and in North Auburn in a small agrarian-dairying world.
She graduated from Edward Little High School in 1954. Without scholarships, she forewent her aspirations for a nursing career and chose a clerical calling and the Auburn Maine School of Commerce.
She enrolled in the two-year curriculum and despite universal assurances, "It can't be done," she fully achieved it in one academic year, topping all tests in the allotted time-frames, the highest ranking in her class of 1955.
She was a secretary for Alonzo J. Harriman Associates, architects and engineers, of Auburn, for some 10 years.
She married Jay S. Hoar of Rangeley in June 1959. They lived in Auburn, Solon, Castine and Temple.
She found her forte in the legal world and met challenging work daily at the law firm of Williams and Williams, for some 35 years in Farmington.
She upgraded herself to a certified paralegal and belonged to the Maine Legal Secretaries Association.
Her technical computer abilities were of incalculable value to her husband's recent books. She made him look good to the world - the awesome task wives are up against.
A member of Temple's Good Neighbor Club, she excelled at home, where she led in her daughter Sheryl's growth and interests. With husband, Jay, she thrilled to "bandboosterhood" for the Mt. Blue High School Marching Band, 1979 to 1984.
Descended in three lines from the Mayflower and from a Polish-American heritage, Arline was a beloved family member.
She leaves her husband, professor Jay S. Hoar of Temple; daughter, Sheryl Lucinda Hoar of Lynn, Mass.; a brother, Richard C. Keene of West Turner and his family, wife, Rita; nieces, Tina (Mrs. Terence) McCormick, Cindy (Mrs. Jeff Roy) and Kendra Keene; nephew, James "Jimmy" Keene of West Turner; grandnieces, Lauren Roy and Hayley McCormick; grandnephews, Brogan McCormick and Evan Roy; and a sister-in-law, Linda (Mrs. Ernest V.) Keene of West Turner.
She was predeceased by her brother, Ernest V. Keene, in late July 2007.
Her brother' obituary:
AUBURN - Ernest Vernon Keene, 77, passed away Sunday, July 29, at the Androscoggin Hospice House.
"Ernie" was born April 2, 1930, in West Turner, the son of Clarence E. and Nellie (Tupai) Keene. He attended one-room schools in West Turner and at Brighton Hill, in Hebron, until his family moved in 1945 to West Auburn. He was a 1949 graduate of Edward Little High School.
He married Linda S. Wheeler of Sabattus, June 16, 1973. He especially loved and enjoyed the home he and his wife Linda built, fulfilling his life dream of returning to live on the site of the old family farm.
Besides working on the family farm, he was employed by J. Webster Bennett Canning Co. and Wesley Urquhart Ice Co. during his high school years. For years he drove trucks for Eastern State Farmers Exchange, Agway Grain and Petroleum, Bass Shoe Co. and Hall and Knight Hardware Co., retiring in 1995.
Besides his wife, Linda, he leaves a brother, Richard C. Keene and his wife, Rita, of West Turner; a sister, Arline K. Hoar and her husband, Jay, of Temple; nieces, Tina McCormick and her husband, Terrance, and children, Brogan and Hayley, of West Turner, Cindy Roy and her husband, Jeff, and children, Lauren, and Evan, of West Turner, Sheryl L. The Keene family would like to extend special thanks to the nurses and staff of the Hospice for their special care given to Ernie.
