OAKFIELD - Mary A. (Nicholson) Sprague, 88, after a life well-lived, died May 11, 2004, in Brewer, at the home of her daughter, Charlene. Mary was born Dec. 20, 1915, in Island Falls, the daughter of Daniel and Inez (Morgan) Nicholson. Mary had to leave high school in her senior year to care for her mother during a prolonged illness. She married Charles Sprague in July 1935, and raised her family. In her mid-40's, she returned to school and earned her diploma. She became a licensed insurance agent. Together with her husband, they ran an independent insurance agency in Oakfield for many years. They also operated a sporting goods store and sold gasoline. After Charles died in 1983 she became active with Big Brothers, Big Sisters and worked as a teacher's aide in the local schools. Mary loved summers at camp surrounded by her family. She is survived by two daughters, Charlene and her husband, Clayton Hardy, of Brewer and Susan Everett of Clayton, Del.; son-in-law, Hollis Edwards of Winterport; granddaughters, Ellen Hardy and her husband, Peter Morse, of Ansonia, Conn., Holly and husband, Robert Overmeyer, of Camden, Del., and April and her husband, Wesley Burris, of Hartley, Del.; one grandson, Frank Hardy of Anchorage, Alaska; five great-grandsons, Robert Overmeyer, Devin Morse, Morgan Morse, Ethan Overmeyer and Wesley Burris many nieces and nephews; and one sister, Laurena Bishop of Oakfield. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles and daughter, Maryann Sprague Edwards; six brothers, Norman, Neil, Harley, Daniel "Jinx", Norris and Fred; one sister, Kate Hoar. Mary will be missed by many friends especially her sister-in-law and best friend, Ruby Sprague. The family wishes to thank very special friends, Patsy and Herbert Splan and Marie Hartley for their care and assistance; also, many thanks to St. Joseph Hospice staff for their wonderful care during a very difficult time. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 14, at Bowers Funeral Home, Island Falls, where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 15, 2004, with the Rev. Kirby Rushton officiating.
