Evanswood
Died: in Evanswood, Wis., Jan 15, 1884. Daniel Hoar, aged 72 years, 11 months and 21 days.
The Death of Daniel Hoar has cast a gloom over the entire community; he lived in this neighborhood over 19 years; had hardly ever seen a sick day. Mr. Hoar got up in the morning feeling as well as usual, doing his work, then taking a team to Ritz's mill. When he came home, he carried his grist to the house and started with the team to go across the street. It was noticed the team stopped and he was found dead; he died without a struggle or a groan.

A REVOLUTIONARY HERITAGE (cont.)
Major Josiah Gardner
Still erect in the Vernal Cemetery, east of the Attica-
Middlebury line and the East Transit Line of the Holland Purchase,
is a marble slab to the memory of "Major Josiah Gardner, Died June
29, 1843; Aged 88 yrs? Here rests a soldier of the Revolution."
The burial site has been long neglected and is overgrown and the
tombstones scattered. Born at Brimfield, Mass., he enlisted in
August 1776 from South Brimfield and served four months in Capt.
Jehiel Munger's company under Col. Woodbridge's Massachusetts
Regiment. Again, in May 1777, he enlisted as a Private in Capt.
Caleb Keep's company with Col. William Shepherd commanding. He made
application for a pension Wo. 13,126, Oct. 16, 1832, when 77 years
old, and was allowed $36.66 per annum. This claim was located in
the National Archives by the late Miss Miriam Edwards, Attica
archivist. He died at Attica.
Quite probably Gardner's rank of Major came from the State
Militia, possibly in New York- State as he came to Attica about l8ll
or 1812. His wife was Katherine Fenton. The biographical review of
Livingston and Wyoming counties claims that Major Gardner was an
officer of the Continental Army, for which no proof was found, and
was a man of substance and a farmer of good circumstances in the
East. Major Gardner died at the home of his grandson, Patrick R.
Gardner. The Veteran accompanied his son Asher and family into
Attica, and the grandson Patrick, born in 1812, was said to have
been the very first white male child born in that section of town.
The biographical sketch further states that Major Gardner was a
member of the Massachusetts Legislature and was on Washington's
staff. Again, we have no substantiation for these claims.
