Her family was at her side. Jean was born in Bingham, on March 15, 1926, to the Rev. Arthur R. Macdougall Jr., and Leah Parks Macdougall. Her childhood stories of growing up in a small town parsonage at the edge of the big woods and on the banks of the Kennebec River entertained generations of her family. Jean was a graduate of Bingham High School and attended Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing during WWII. She was a graduate of Farmington State Teachers College (University of Maine at Farmington) where she earned a degree in Home Economics. She went on to teach in several school systems in Maine. Eventually, she expanded her certification to include elementary and special education. For a time she held the position of Special Education Director in Milo. Jean's love of Scotland and her Scottish heritage gave her many hours of enjoyment. She traveled extensively in Scotland and especially loved Oban, Argyll. She developed warm and lasting friendships with people she met in her travels. She worked tirelessly to share her knowledge of Clan Macdougall with those who visited the Macdougall tent at the Maine Highland Games. Jean was extremely talented with her hands and created exquisite pieces of handwork for her family and friends. In her younger years she made all of her own clothes, as well as clothes for her children, relatives and friends. In recent years, she organized several of her neighborhood friends into the Knit and Crochet Group. Favorite K and C projects included hats and mittens for homeless shelters and helmet liners for U.S. troops. She was married in 1948 to Edward S. Dingley of Farmington. They made their home first in Bingham and later in Portland. Together, they had four children, Arthur, Betsy, Melinda and Miriam. Jean also had a daughter, Martha, with her second husband, Kenneth W. Horr. Jean is survived by her siblings, Leah Rawding and her husband Edwin, Nellie Parks and her husband Warren and Walter Macdougall and his wife Judy. She is also survived by her children, Dr. Arthur Dingley and his wife Tami of Farmington, Betsy Lane of Yarmouth, Melinda Doel and her husband Stephen of Freeport, Miriam Parks and her husband Wright of Reno, Nev., and Martha DeCesere and her husband Joseph of Raymond. In addition, she is survived by her seven grandchildren, forever special in her eyes: Zebulon and Nathan Dingley, Matt Lane and his wife Erin, Natalie Doel, Whitney and Jordan Parks, Nicole DeCesere, and a step-granddaughter, Kerri Cooper. Several nieces, nephews and cousins survive her as well. Jean will be especially remembered for her wonderful sense of humor which continued to shine and endure through her last difficult months. Her striking blue eyes and winning smile charmed all who knew her. The memorial service will be on Saturday, May 17, at 3 p.m., at the First Baptist Church of Paris, 500 Main St., Paris Hill. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to: Clan MacDougall Society of North America Vice President for the Treasury: Don MacDougall 2471 Freetown Dr. Reston, Virginia 20191-2527 treasurer@macdougall.org Jean Macdougall Dingley Horr Published in the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram on 5/14/2008. | MacDougall, Jean (I32671)
