Retired Army Brig. Gen. John B. Hoar Jr. died Saturday in his home in Atlanta, apparently of a heart attack. He was 86.
Born and raised in Boston, Gen. Hoar was a Boston firefighter before joining the Army at the outset of World War II.
In the early days of the war, he commanded a military police detachment that safeguarded overseas radio installations on the South Shore.
After the fighting began in North Africa, he organized and supervised a prisoner of war camp for Italian and German detainees in North Africa. He returned to this country with a group of POWs and organized prisoner of war camps throughout New England.
After a brief tour of duty as director of security and intelligence at Fort Devens, he served as a military police adviser to the Chinese Nationalist Army.
As a major during the Korean War, he oversaw the detainment of prisoners of war.
He was promoted to brigadier general as a member of the Massachusetts National Guard and was president of MacArthur Military Academy in Mount Freedom, N.J., until his retirement in 1975.
He leaves his wife, Hattie; a daughter, Jeanne Boger of Atlanta; a son, John B. 3d of Manchester, N.H.; a brother, Charles F. of West Roxbury; and a sister, Evelyn Day, of Weymouth.
A funeral Mass was held Tuesday in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Atlanta. Burial will be Monday in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington.

HOAR, Frances Marion (Geisel)
Frances Marion (Geisel) Hoar, 85, of Woodstock, died Saturday, (April 7, 2001) in the Day Kimble Hospital. Born in Phorzheim, Germany, she came to the U.S. in 1929, settling in Windsor with her parents, two sisters and two brothers. She attended Windsor schools, and graduated from Hartford Hospital School of Nursing in 1940. In 1942, Frances joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. as a 1st Lieutenant, serving in the Second World War primarily in the Pacific Theatre until 1945, for which she received the Asiatic Pacific Decoration. After the war, she was employed as a nurse at the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company and joined the Connecticut Air National Guard as a Captain in 1951, serving until her medical discharge in 1953. Frances raised her family in Simsbury, until moving to Glastonbury in 1987. She moved in 1999 to Woodstock, living with her daughter, Ann. She leaves behind a son, Paul and his wife, Kathleen Hoar of Glastonbury; daughters and their husbands, Jackie and Joe Lovett of Marlborough, Liz and Phil Doherty of Old Lyme, Margaret and Michael Eck of Trafalgar, IN, Ann and Stephen Adams of Woodstock, and Marilyn and Keith Emery of Kensington, MD. She is also survived by her brother, Robert Geisel and her sister, Ann Markesich, both of Windsor. "Oma", as she was known by her family, was blessed with 18 grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 10, 4:30 p.m., in the Glastonbury Funeral Home, 450 New London Tpke., Glastonbury. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday, 3 p.m. until service time. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. A reception will follow in the Colonnade, 2941 Main St., Glastonbury. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 45 Ash St., East Hartford, CT 06108-3272 or the Womens War Memorial in Washington, DC.

Ann Markesich
Immigrated to the United States at the age of nine, was very devoted to her family

Ann (Geisel) Markesich, 91, of Windsor, beloved wife of the late Peter J. Markesich passed away Thursday, (March 17, 2011) at a local convalescent home.
Born April 20, 1919 in Pforzheim, Germany, daughter of the late Carl R. and Sophie (Beutel) Geisel. She immigrated to the United States at the age of nine and has lived in Windsor ever since. She attended the Windsor schools and graduated from Windsor High School with the Class of 1937 as the class valedictorian. After school she was employed by Hanson Whitney Co., Hartford as an engineer's aid and sales correspondent and then later worked for A.C. Geisel Co. before retiring. Ann was a parishioner of St. Gabriel Church, Windsor where she was a member of the Good Shepherd Choir for many years. She enjoyed her trips to the RI shore during the summer and was very devoted to her family.
Ann is survived by a son, R. Michael Markesich of Windsor; a daughter, Frances Hoffnagle of Canton; two grandchildren, Heidi Garritty and Michael R. Hoffnagle; two great grandchildren, Michael Kane and Ethan Garritty; two brothers-in-law, Stephen and Fred Markesich; two sisters-in-law, Alice Dinalo and Margaret Rostek and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Peter D. Markesich; two brothers, Arthur and Robert Geisel; two sisters, Matilda Geisel and Frances Hoar.
Family and friends may gather Monday, March 21, 9:15 a.m., at Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 10 a.m., at St. Gabriel Church, Windsor. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Windsor. Her family will receive friends Sunday from 3-5 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to American Lung Association of CT, 45 Ash St., East Hartford, CT 06108-3272.

GEISEL, Robert C.
Robert C. Geisel, 81, of Windsor, husband of Jean (Caesar) Geisel, died Sunday, (March 10, 2002) at the Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester, MA. He was born in Pforzheim Germany, on November 8, 1920, to the late Carl R. and Sophie (Beutel) Geisel. He immigrated to the United States at age seven and lived in Windsor for almost 75 years. Mr. Geisel was a decorated U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a mechanical engineer by trade and was last employed by PA Industries of Bloomfield. He was an active golfer and vegetable gardener; and a devoted friend, husband, father, and grandfather. Mr. Geisel was a communicant of St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, a trustee of the church for 40 years, a founding father of St. Gabriel's School, and an active member of the Parish Council. His most enduring legacy is his countless efforts on behalf of the Town of Windsor. He served on the Windsor Town Council from 1967 to 1981, including a two-year term, 1971-1973, as deputy mayor. He also served at various times on the Economic Development Commission, Historic District Commission, Charter Revision Commission, and the Jury Commission. He was extremely proud of spearheading the restoration and expansion of the Windsor Public Library when it was slated to be replaced. This library has been cited as one of the ten most beautiful public buildings in the State. He also headed a successful effort to save Millbrook Golf Club from development and save it as open space for Windsor. Mr. Geisel's crowning civic achievement is the restoration of the Stony Hill School as a living museum of a one-room schoolhouse. In addition to Jean, his loving wife of 59 years, Mr. Geisel is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Robert, Jr. of Greenfield, NH, and Frederick and his wife Faye of Gloucester, MA, and a daughter and son-in-law, Jeanne and Gary Meade of Chester; grandchildren, Stacy and Steve Kirchof of Aliquippa, PA, Todd Geisel of Pittsfield, MA, Courtney and Robert Bethel of Bennington, NH, Molly and Kevin Geisel of Gloucester, MA, and Mathilda

Tillie'' Meade of Chester; two great grandchildren, Taylor and Shawn Kirchof of Aliquippa, PA; a sister, Ann Markesich of Windsor; and many devoted nieces, nephews, family and friends. He was predeceased by two sisters, Mathilda Geisel and Frances Hoar; his brother, Arthur; daughter-in-law, Ann (Kellner) Geisel; and son-in-law, Kevin Slaughter. Family and friends may gather Thursday, March 14, 9 a.m., at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 10 a.m., in St. Gabriel's Church, Windsor.
