May 13, 1849. Age 47. s/o Alexander Brown I. w/ Lucy Hoard. http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/HOARD/2003-06/1055903432 Article taken from "The Early History of Fluvanna Chautauqua County, N.Y. with numerous biographical and family sketches by Betty Sherwin" . Alexander Brown, Jr. and Lucy Hoard I his wife, and two children, came to Fluvanna between Dec. 25, 1825 and October 1827. He built a shingled house opposite Minor Shaw near the lake shore in 1828. Mr. Brown also built a tannery near the western part of where the "Johnson Ice House" stood. It was operated by him for a number of years. At that time tanbark cost $1.50 per cord and was ground under a large stone. As all tanneries at that time used this method for grinding bark, a description would be of interest. These stories were circular, about eight inches thick and about seven feet across. This was set on edge with a horizontal shaft attached to a revolving center post; a horse was hitched to this shaft and the stone was rolled in a circle on the bark placed on the floor. Some times water power was used for this purpose. In 1845 or 1850 steam came into use for propelling machinery for the larger tanneries. This small tannery was a convenience to the early settlers, as nearly all farmers at that early period had leather made for their family boots and shoes, and also for other purposes. Mr. Brown conducted this tannery until about 1846. Mr. Brown died May l3,1849. Mr. and Mrs. Brown were the parents of ten children. Lorenzo and Harry came with their parents; Samuel, Almon, Abagail, Alexander, George, Jane and Sarah, were born in Fluvanna. Lorenzo, unmarried, for many years, lived in the house now the home of James L. Brown (a nephew). Samuel Brown married Abagail Gates; Abagail married Isaac Sherman; both of these families lived in Fluvanna until their death. Sarah Brown lived with Mrs. Sherman until her death in 1917. Almon Brown lives at Chautauqua; George and Jane went west to Kansas. Alexander Brown enlisted and served during the Civil War. At the close of the war he returned and married Sarah Hudson, March 1866. They were the parents of five children. Hudson, married Eva Rhodes, lives in Harmony; Minnie married George Fargo, also lives in Harmony; James, married Grace Stephenson. He is a prominent citizen of Fluvanna. He owns and operates a saw mill and cider mill. He was elected school trustee at different times, was elected Highway Superintendent for the Town of Ellicott 1919, and is prominent in other activities. Mr. and Mrs. Brown are the parents of five children. After Alexander Brown and Sarah Hudson were married, he bought the house which stood across from the old homestead of the Bentleys and moved it down to his farm, corner of the Strunk road where it now is. This house was built on land owned by Walter Simmons and was moved to the corner opposite the Bentley house sometime about 1832. Warner Shaw and his mother lived there until after he was married in 1836. Mrs. Shaw then lived alone until the farm was sold to Mr. Bentley in 1846. Mr. Bentley sold the corner where the house stood to George Chase soon after they purchased the farm in 1849. | Brown, Alexander Jr. (I39159)

The largest number of the early settlers of the town of Stephentown were from the New England colonies. Many came from Rhode Island, settling upon the land of the manor of Bensselaerwj'Ck, adjoining the Massachusetts line. Among the first of the New England emigrants to make their homes on this part of the great manor were Joshua, Caleb and Benjamin Gardner, three brothers ; Asa Douglas, Elnathan Sweet, Nathaniel Rose, Joseph Carpenter, Alexander Brown and Joseph Rogers. Most of these settled here about the year 1766. William Douglas, a grand- son of Asa Douglas, is said to have been the first child bom in this part of the manor. The Hon. Stephen A. Douglas of Illinois was a de- scendant of this Douglas family. | Brown, Alexander Sr. (I41367)

27734 | Source: "The 1901 Biographical Record of Clinton Co., Iowa, Illustrated" published: Chicago : S. J. Clarke Pub. Co., 1901. JOHN M. COOK. Among the old and honored citizens of Orange township is John M. Cook, who owns and operates a fine farm of one hundred and ninety acres on section 27. He was born in Montgomery county, Virginia, on the 6th of November, 1828. His father, Samuel Cook, was a native of Pennsylvania, and when young went to Virginia, where he subsequently married Polly Kipps, a native of that state. Our subject was reared on a farm in Roanoke county, and as he had but limited school privileges he is almost wholly a self-educated man. At an early age he began earning his own livelihood and was inured to hardships and privations. In Rockingham county, Virginia, Mr. Cook was married September 10, 1857, to Miss Mary Chapman, who was also born in that state, and was a daughter of James L. Chapman. Soon after their marriage they removed to Indiana, where they spent about a year, while Mr. Cook served as assistant postmaster at Dalesville, and at the end of that time returned to the Old Dominion. In the spring of 1859 he came with his father-in-law to Clinton county, Iowa, and for three or four years worked on the Chapman farm in Orange township. He then purchased forty acres of land where he now resides, on which not a furrow had been turned nor an improvement made. He had built a house on his father-in-law's place, and this he removed to his own farm, making it his home for several years. He has since enlarged and improved his residence and has added to his farm until he now has one hundred and ninety acres, which he has placed under excellent cultivation. He also owns a twenty-three acre tract of timber land. He has given considerable attention to the raising of a high grade of stock, and is accounted one of the most successful agriculturists of his community. His prosperity has been worthily achieved, as it is due entirely to his own labor, economy and perseverance. Mr. Cook has been called upon to mourn the loss of his estimable wife, who died July 30, 1900, and was laid to rest in the Smith cemetery in Orange township. Unto them were born eleven children, as follows: James S., a resident of Grand Mound; Nettie, who died at the age of twenty years; Lottie, wife of Aden J. Horr, of Tacoma, Washington; Jackson B., who is now carrying on the home farm; Berryman D., who died in Tacoma, Washington, in August, 1888, at the age of twenty-three years; Margaret V., deceased wife of Robert Allison; Fannie, wife of David Allison, of Oregon; William E., who assists in the operation of the home farm; and Stella May, Grace M. and Perry V., all at home. On national issues Mr. Cook has always voted the Democratic ticket since casting his first presidential ballot for Franklin Pierce in 1852, but at local elections he votes independent of party lines, supporting the men whom he believes best qualified for office. He served some years as school director, and also filled the office of supervisor of highways, but has never cared for official honors. He is, however, a public-spirited and progressive citizen, and does all in his power to advance the interests of his community along various lines. | Cook, John M. (I22124)

27735 | Source: 1891 Harrison County Iowa History, pp. 592, 593 HOAR - Christ S. HOAR, an enterprising groceryman doing business at Missouri Valley, came to this place in June, 1878, and being one of the representative business men of the county most naturally finds a place in this connection, for all history is made of the individual lives of men. Our subject was born June 15, 1851, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He is a son of Jonathan and Christina (SEABER) HOAR. The mother was from Germany and came to this country when quite young. The father was an Englishman, but born in Pennsylvania, in 1804, and died in 1860 and was buried in Mifflin County. The mother died in Missouri Valley, Iowa, in 1885, aged seventy-nine years. The father was a blacksmith by trade, and he and his good wife were the parents of fourteen children, and the mother had three children by an earlier marriage. The father had also been married the second time and reared five children, by that marriage, making him the father of nineteen children. Our subject, C. S., was the youngest of the fourteen above named. Of the total number of twenty-two children there are only eight living at this time, and only four of the family to which our subject belonged. His education was received in the common schools of Pennsylvania, and afterward learned the carpenter's trade, at which he worked for fifteen years. He worked at this for five or six years after coming to Missouri Valley, and January 8, 1884, he embarked in the grocer business, continuing until January 1, 1886, when Mathias T. WESTON purchased an interest in the business and Mr. HOAR continued the business under the name of C. S. HOAR & Co.
