Hoar passed away peacefully on February 5, 2011 at the age of 93. Harry was born in Moncton, New Brunswick on May 24, 1917 to Frank and Emily (Bauer) Hoar. He was predeceased by his wife Norah (nee Macquarie) and their son Brian Lawrence. He is survived by two sons, David (Marilyn) and Timothy (Rosella) and three grand-daughters Stacey McArthur (Scott), Dr. Stephanie Hoar (Brent Stephens) and Shanda Hoar and four great grandchildren, Gabrielle McArthur, Claire and Andrew Hoar-Stephens and Elizabeth McArthur. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Harry answered the call of his Country and enlisted in September 1939, won his commission in the summer of 1941 and went overseas in November 1941. He received his captaincy in the summer of 1943, and went to Italy in the autumn of that year. Captain Hoar took part in the campaigns in Sicily and in Italy. He commanded the advanced Third Line 1st Canadian Corps Supply Depot in Italy, France, Belgium and Holland. He was awarded the prestigious M.B.E. (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for his technical skill, cheerfulness, ingenuity and administrative efficiency playing a great part throughout the campaign in ensuring a never failing supply of food forward to more than 100,000 fighting troops, each day of the year. At the end of the War, Harry returned to civilian life and began his career with the New Brunswick Telephone Company. He excelled at using his people skills and intuitive understanding of the needs of both the community and the Company where he eventually became Regional Manager in Saint John. He was actively involved with the Saint John community and in particular the Tourist Bureau, Canadian Institute for the Blind, the Carlton Curling Club, Masonic Order, Rotary Club, and many others. Fishing, travel, gardening and other projects called Harry into retirement at the age of 57 and he and his wife Norah embarked on travels throughout the world over a 17 year period until Norah's death. Harry continued to live at New River Beach where he entertained his extraordinarily large number of friends and business associates with his story telling, his magnificent flowers and garden and tales about his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Just prior to his 90th birthday, Harry got tired of living alone and checked himself into the Saint John Regional Hospital where he resided for a short time pending his admission to the Ridgewood Veterans Wing where he resided until his passing. Harry treated all people with friendship and respect, regardless of their station in life. He was known for his listening skills, his analytical and business experiences, his story telling, his marksmanship and his great sense of humour. He was also known to have a drink of single malt scotch from time to time. We are sure that he is toasting all of his friends at this time. Relatives and friends are invited to join the family in a celebration of Harry's life, which will be held as a reception on Thursday, February 10, 2011 between the hours of 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Brenan's Bay View Funeral Home, 1461 Manawagonish Road, Saint John (506) 634-7425. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or the War Amps. An interment service will be held at a later date. Online condolences may be placed at www.brenansfh.com. | Hoar, Harry (I34969)
