(Jo Daviess County), 2-5-1920. MRS. GEORGE LEEKLEY DEAD Entered into Eternal Rest on February 3rd, 1920, at the family residence in Galena, Mrs. Tamer Raine Leekly, widow of the late George Leekly. The death of Mrs. Leekly will bring sorrow to many hearts besides those in her immediate family. Among a large circle of friends she was held in the highest esteem, her evident interest, her self denial, her solicitude for the comfort and pleasure of others, earned for her the warmest of lasting friendships. Although somewhat affected by imperfect hearing, yet her's was a heart that could and did enter largely into the joys and sorrows of her associates. As a Devout member of Grace Episcopal Parish, she enjoyed a full measure of religious life. Strong convictions and unwavering Faith were manifested in every expression whether by word or example. During her prolonged illness she was given the most constant attention and care of devotion by her children. Her Bible and prayer book and Church Almanac were her daily companions and gave comfort and strength to her belief. She looked forward with joy to reunion with those who she loved and from whom she had been temporarily parted. Realizing in an unusual degree the certainty and definiteness of life beyond the grave she had no fears but that in the unknown all was well and all would be well. The faith that had guided her through earthly life would bring her the bliss of immortal life, and so quietly and peacefully she passed into the rest eternal. Mrs. Leekley was born at Mt. Pleasant, Pa. February 8, 1832 and married to George Leekly December 14, 1848. Her husband preceded her to the grave in 1866, the year they arrived in Galena. There were born to this family eight children, Mary Jane, Julia Ann, John Raine, Thomas A., Julia Ellen, Henrietta C., Annie Elizabeth, and George. Of these but two are living. There were ten grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the residence on Friday morning at ten o'clock, the Rev. F. E. Bernard of Freeport officiating. Interment will be held in Greenwood Cemetery with private services at the grave. | Raine, Tamer (I16764)

He was born in Salem, this county, March 6, 1848, and is a son of Warren Hamilton, a native of Massachusetts, and who was born at Pelham in 1816. For many years after coming to Michigan he was Secretary and Treasurer of the Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Washtenaw County, and held a prominent place in the confidence of the people. He was a son of Joel Hamilton, of Scotch descent. Col. Warren Hamilton, the father of our subject, was Colonel of a regiment of State militia of Michigan, and hence the title. The mother of our subject was Miss Anna Waldron. She was born in the town of Romulus, Seneca County, N. Y., in 1817. She was a daughter of Richard Waldron, who was a lineal descendant of Baron Resolve Waldron, of Holland, and who had the first land grant in the city of New York, given by the king of Holland for services rendered to his native country. Warren Hamilton came to Michigan when only eighteen years old, and settled in Salem Township, where he carried on general farming for a number of years. He was married after coming here, at about the age of twenty-one. He then removed to Ann Arbor, and there became Secretary and Treasurer of the Mutual Fire Insurance Company. His death occurred in 1877, and he left a widow and six children, four of whom are still living. Alex. W. Hamilton is the fifth in order of birth of the family. He spent his youth on the farm and received the rudiments of his education at the district school. He entered the High School at Ann Arbor, and completed the course in two years, after which he entered the Classical Department of the University of Michigan, graduating in 1871, and taking the degree of Bachelor of Arts. In 1873 the degree of A. M. was conferred The succeeding year he devoted to study in the law course in the University of Michigan, and was admitted to the bar in 1872 and commenced the practice of his profession in the Athens of the West. In 1881 he was made the Secretary of the Toledo and Ann Arbor Railroad, and during his term of office was Attorney for the road. Resuming his law practice, he was instrumental in organizing numerous business enterprises, among others the water company, which was organized in 1885, and under this organization our subject is now President and Superintendent. Under his executive management much has been accomplished. Twenty-live miles of water mains have been laid in the city, and the works are among the most perfectly constructed in the State. This has not only required time on the part of Mr. Hamilton, but also large investments in money. Aside from the interests above mentioned, Mr. Hamilton is one of the Directors of the Michigan Furniture Company, which employs from eighty to one hundred men. The fine tract of land comprising forty-five acres, in the southern part of the city, is laid out as an addition by Hamilton, Rose & Sheehan, the center of which is a park comprising eight and one-half acres, donated to the city and called Hamilton Park. Mr. Hamilton owns the fine building known as the Hamilton Block, which is situated on the corner of Huron and Fourth Streets. October 3, 1877, Mr. Hamilton was united in marriage with Miss May Hale, a daughter of Lorenzo D. Hale, of Ann Arbor. She is a native of Jackson County, this State. Mrs. Hamilton is an attractive woman, who presides with dignity and elegance over their pleasant home. Our subject is a stanch Republican, and an influential man in the State. He has been a member of the Presbyterian Church for twenty years past, and is one of its Trustees. Mr. Hamilton cast his first vote for U. S. Grant, and his last for Benjamin F. Harrison. ELIJAH HORR, D. D., was the third son and fifth child of the family. He was born April 20, 1841. In early life he was very frail, and for some years it was doubtful whether he would grow to manhood. He early evinced a desire for an education, and availed himself of every opportunity for reading and study. At the age of 15 he began to attend the Gouverneur Seminary. Here he fitted for an advanced standing in college, teaching winters from the time he was 16, and attending the fall and spring terms. Circumstances prevented his completion of the college course, upon which he had set his heart, and after some time spent in teaching at Evans Mills and West Carthage, he entered what is now the Theological Department of Boston University, from which he graduated in 1863. He at once entered upon the work of the ministry in the Methodist Episcopal Church, having successive pastorates in Ilion, Syracuse and Auburn. While in the latter city, at the instance of the Presbyterian pastors, Hamilton College conferred upon him the degree of M. A., in recognition of his scholarly attainments. The same degree was also conferred, a few years after, by Syracuse University, which was founded while Dr. Horr was pastor in that city, and in which he has always taken a great interest. Until 1882 he was a member of the Central New York Conference, taking the most important appointments within its bounds, and serving for years as Conference Secretary, an office entailing great responsibilities and affording large influence. In the fall of 1882 he was called to Walnut Street Church, Chelsea, Mass., in the New England Conference. Here he at once took high rank, and was greatly in demand as a platform speaker and lecturer. One of the elements of Dr. Horr's popularity in the various cities in which he has labored, has been his interest as a citizen, as well as a public teacher and clergyman, in all public questions. These he has discussed in the pulpit and on the platform freely and fearlessly. During his pastorate in Chelsea he was unanimously invited by the city government to give the oration at its memorial service for General Grant. In 1886 the Maverick Congregational Church of Boston gave him an unanimous call to become its pastor, and he remained with them between seven and eight years, when he was called to Piedmont Church, Worchester, Mass., where he now (1894) resides. The Boston Herald, on the eve of his departure from that city, said: "Without the slightest sensationalism he discusses all the topics of the day, and subjects that alike interests old and young. His popularity is by no means confined to his own congregation, or even to Boston. He is possessed of considerable reputation as an after-dinner speaker, and delivered many addresses in the late conflict on the school question. He is broad-minded and has a fine command of language, and as an extemporaneous speaker he has few superiors in Boston. He is especially popular with young people, in whom he takes a great interest, and he has addressed from the platform members of the Young People' Society of Christian Endeavor in all parts of the State." His denomination has shown their confidence in his judgment and business sagacity by placing him upon some of the most important of their boards of trust. He is a corporate member and upon the prudential committee of the American Board; is a member of the executive committee of the American Association; also of the Sunday School and Publishing Society, and a director of the American Congregational Association.
