H. Hoard, who lies ill at his home some twelve miles from the city with typhoid fever, is in a critical condition to-day." (Brainerd Dispatch, 16 September 1887, p. 3, c. 3) Obituary: The funeral of S. H. Hoard, whose death was announced in last Friday's DISPATCH, occurred on Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church, the Rev. S. White conducting the ceremonies. Mr. Hoard was a member of Evergreen Lodge, No. 90, I. O. O. F., of this city, and the remains were followed to the grave by a large delegation of members of that order where the impressive funeral services of Odd Fellowship were observed. Mr. Hoard was a man whose dealing with his fellow men made friends for him with all classes of people. For several years he has been employed at J. J. Howe & Co.'s mill as filer, coming here from Wisconsin. During the past year Mr. Hoard took up a homestead near Lake Edward, in Cass county, and his family was living there at the time he was taken sick, and to which place he went when the fever first appeared. His condition was not considered dangerous until the night of his death. The deceased leaves a wife and four children to mourn his untimely death.
